Big adventures, small budgets. November 18, 2012. As I stood in the very hot shower this morning letting the water run for an excessive amount of time, I suddenly had a thought. 8220;Man I had better enjoy these hot showers now because who knows what I am going to be getting when I travel.”. Which led to –. 8220;What exactly will I be missing as I travel – what are the things I take for granted? As we head into the Thanksgiving week here are the things that I am thankful for and take for granted everyday.

Big adventures, small budgets. November 28, 2012. Angels Landing, Zion National Park, Utah. We took this pic while hiking up Angel’s Landing at Zion. A narrow trail with sheer cliffs on either side leads to the 5,790 foot peak. We think they should add this Helen Keller quote to the sign. Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window). Hello
http://fourbackpacks.com/hello
Big adventures, small budgets. January 26, 2013. Where have I been you ask? Taking a break from my blog. I didn’t want to, but I hit a wall. With all the stuff that has been going on with our house, I have been wondering just what should I be blogging about. We are in limbo. Are we leaving this year or not? What in the world do I write about if I am not leaving this August? Then I ran across an article. About why 95% of bloggers give up and I suddenly had some inspiration. It’s good to be back. You’...

Big adventures, small budgets. December 29, 2012. It began with cracks in our bedroom walls. And they were getting worse. Some of our doors were not closing; others were starting to stick. Our neighbors were getting their foundation fixed, and we knew ours was having problems as well. We called the company who repaired our foundation four years ago, just before we bought the house, to see if our warranty would cover the damage. What followed has been a complete fuc*ing disaster. Putting in the Piers.

Big adventures, small budgets. Education on the Road. December 4, 2012. After many days of research I am excited to be telling you about a type of schooling that I have fallen in love with. Unschooling - is it right for us? Education that is led by your kids. Now the pros and cons of this type of learning. Kids get to see and experience the “real world” by learning about multiple cultures as they travel or explore their surroundings. Curiosity is promoted and encouraged to be explored. I plan to address ...

Budget Fail

Big adventures, small budgets. January 30, 2013. So my mother in law was over for breakfast the other morning. She thought it would be great fun to come over early and help us cook up a hearty meal. Fine with us – we like hearty. So we decided on homemade biscuits and gravy. Yum. I put the mother in law on gravy duty, as Ryan has always sworn that she makes the best gravy in the world (thanks Ryan). She put the milk into the measuring cup while she fried up some bacon to make grease for the roux. Turns o...

Mardi Gras with Kids

Big adventures, small budgets. Mardi Gras with Kids. February 18, 2013. 8220;Mardi Gras with kids! 8221; This was the reaction I got from most people when I told them I was taking my kids to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. The look that came with it made me start to worry that maybe they knew something more than I did. Really, how bad could it be? Crowds from the edge of Jackson Square in the French Quarter. The silver man. He mechanically gave each of our kids a lollypop. Keep your eyes on the machete.
