You Can’t Stuff A Classroom Down A CAT5 Cable. Written by Dick Carlson. With great sensitivity and thoughtfulness, I told her that those of us with a great deal of experience in developing online learning had a technical term for that concern. We called it “dumb”. As you might expect, a short silence followed. I need to interject here that my new friend understands that I’m an obnoxious,. What she needed to do was learn about the wonderful things that you can do in the online world that you can’t d...

About
http://www.techherding.com/about-2
So why is it called “Tech Herding”? I spent five years at the Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington — managing technical cats, and trying to get them to give me learning content that I could share out with our customers. Internally, this kind of work was called “cat-herding” — to indicate both the degree of difficulty involved and how scratched you could get in the process. (I won’t mention the other type of injury, which involves fluid and lifted kitty legs.). Comments on this entry are closed.

Members-Only Content: Yes, It’s Still A Bad Idea. Written by Dick Carlson. Probably one of the most common questions I’m asked when speaking is about how to lock up your content so only the members of your group (association, members, subscribers) can get at it. I’m asked to compare security schemes, log-in requirements, passwords and Askimet. Tests to make sure that only those with permission can see the good stuff. And you can now see it all. Strange Social Media or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Embrace the Anarchy. February 18, 2009. I am new to this Social Media space. For those that have no clue what I am talking about, it means many things to many people but most would agree that sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are part of it. My Brother-in-law. I accepted it as gospel, that LinkedIn was a way to digitize your existing network. What’s the Point. The second was a quick Twitter exchange between two folks a follow. It was...

Customer Experience, Marketing, Innovation, Conversations. How to Poorly Represent for Your Brand in 140 Characters or Less. Posted July 19, 2009. Filed under: Social Media. Today, I went to BestBuy with my 15 year old daughter to look for a digital camcorder. She wanted something that did HD and we found an interesting model for $149. I suggested that we go back home and read some customer reviews before buying it (plus, she had neglected to bring her money). For their innovative use of social media, bo...

Podcasts, Webinars…. A Defense of the LMS (and a case for the future of Social Learning). May 12, 2010. Argument #1: LMS is an essential business application (whether Jane likes it or not…). Even if you wrongly believe that LMS’s are only about tracking courses and assessments, reporting on compliance and certifications, and pushing content onto new hires or to address learner skill gaps, LMSs still deliver unmistakable business value. Why? In other words, among even the most experienced workers, 1 out o...
