The TechSmiths: June 2013

http://techsmiths.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

THE spot for news of, about, and for The TechSmiths: Mark, Brenda, McKenzie, Hunter (and Titanius! I have been continuing my series of colorized photos and posting before-and-afters in an album on my Facebook page. Yesterday I posted this one. Elizabeth L. Gardner, Class 43-W-6. I am posting this as my salute to the WASP and Libby Gardner. Thank you for your pioneering service to our country and for providing can-do motivation for our young women. Posted by The TechSmiths. The TechSmiths: An Old Passion (Well, Several, Actually)

http://techsmiths.blogspot.com/2014/08/an-old-passion-well-several-actually.html

THE spot for news of, about, and for The TechSmiths: Mark, Brenda, McKenzie, Hunter (and Titanius! An Old Passion (Well, Several, Actually). Though it seems a strange thing for a person who spent a career as an engineer, I had a large interest in acting, once. In my high school, I was the first person (perhaps only? At my first job after college, in northern Ohio, I joined a troupe at the Fine Arts Center in Willoughby. We did a lot of fun shows, like "Man of La Mancha," "Camelot," and "Oliver! Working o...

The TechSmiths: Remembering Dad

http://techsmiths.blogspot.com/2013/10/remembering-dad.html

THE spot for news of, about, and for The TechSmiths: Mark, Brenda, McKenzie, Hunter (and Titanius! Dad and I shared the same birthday. I have to admit it: when I was a kid, it was tough, sharing my birthday with someone else. (Thank goodness it was not also Christmas! The book and slide-rule represented his college days at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. In the lower left, the buffalo represents his first post-war job, which was with the Federal B...

The TechSmiths: And More Games!

http://techsmiths.blogspot.com/2014/08/and-more-games.html

THE spot for news of, about, and for The TechSmiths: Mark, Brenda, McKenzie, Hunter (and Titanius! You would be excused for thinking that I've begun a third career, designing boardgames. Being part of a large and varied group of gamers that meets weekly is a tonic that often breeds new ideas. The map is based on part of the city of Tobruk, in Libya. The dusty roads and flat-topped buildings give the sense of a city that was hardscrabble to start with, even though it is now a treasure-trove for the hu...

McKenzie: December 2006

http://techsmiths-mck.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 14, 2006. McKenzie doesn't give her poor parents much to work with, regarding her life a thousand miles away! So, we'll just consider this a stub blog, which she can flesh out, when she finds time and/or motivation. Show are some pictures from last year. McKenzie joined the Marching Owl Band (MOB) as a Show Assistant. This meant that she built props and acted in the halftime shows at home football games. It also meant she got to wear a cool fedora! Hunter: April 2007

http://techsmiths-hunter.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, April 21, 2007. Milestone - The Junior Prom! One of the great coming-of-age ceremonies is going to your first prom. When his own good time came, we received the word "Emily" and we then rushed on to the next phase: waiting for him to invite her, in his own good time, of course. Well, that about sums up the whole process: eager parents anticipate, discuss, suggest, then await Hunter's participation. We expect that's a universal experience (at least, with male offspring). A Geek for Google.

Tuesday, July 08, 2008. It's been a month, but I realize I forgot to post anything about Hunter kicking the dust of the high school years off his shoes; he's moving on. So here are a couple of mementos of that happy occasion. Posted by The TechSmiths @ 2:49 PM. A Geek for Google. Finally a College Student. A Full Slate of Choices! Second Time a Champion! http://techsmiths-mck.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 13, 2009. The payoff arrives for all the work. Through the Sally Port (forbidden by tradition between freshman orientation and graduation), through the Lovett Hall arch, and out to a grateful family. After four years of enduring Texas, McKenzie snags her sheepskin and joins The Real World as a BioEngineer. PS - Look out, World! Posted by The TechSmiths at 6:28 PM. Opinion: August 2010

http://techsmithsopinion.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Wherein, I explore the questions that move me to words. Today I read an article in the newspaper revealing that American births declined last year. With a birth rate of 13.5 per 1,000 (the lowest in the last century; in fact, in 1909 it was 30 per 1,000), the article expressed concern lest we slip into "choked growth" similar to that suffered by Japan. Countervailing currents will take action before then, but that IS a mathematical certainty of unbridled growth in population.). The people in the Third Wo...

McKenzie: August 2010

http://techsmiths-mck.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, August 28, 2010. Moving On With Life. McKenzie took a year away from the books. Seems that California colleges were imploding and scholarships were being stripped from people who had been awarded them. So it's just as well she didn't end up at Stanford or Caltech. After a stint in retail, she qualified for a job at BMW, building cars. That ain't easy; the testing (mental, physical, and medical) is rigorous. She has decided she does NOT like nerve conduction studies! Georgia Tech ChE Dept.

Mark's Librivox Activity

Updated Aug 28, 2014. More recently. I've been participating more in the poetry side of LibriVox, in collaborative works. And. have you listened to our crazy 9th Anniversary Song? Ruth Golding rewrote the words to "Funiculi, Funicula" by Luigi Denza to explain our mission in a salute called, "LibriVox is Nine! Then she accepted recordings from all and sundry, piecing them together to get the semi-coherent, certainly funny version you can hear here:. We even had some canines weigh in at important points!

McKenzie

Saturday, January 15, 2011. News is good from Georgia Tech! After a tough semester playing "catch-up" to all the ChE's proceeding along the graduate track, McKenzie came through with excellent grades and then swung into prepping for her PhD Qualifying Exams. Her written component for the Qualifiers met all specs, and her oral component (completed yesterday) appears to have gone very well. At this point, CNN (Campus Nosy Network) is making the call for this election IN FAVOR of Candidate McKenzie! You wan...
