About TED « Textiles Environment Design

3 – Design to Reduce Chemical Impacts « Textiles Environment Design
http://www.tedresearch.net/3-reduce-chemical-impacts
3 Design to Reduce Chemical Impacts. This strategy is about appropriate material selection and processes for any product to minimise environmental impacts. Ldquo; One cupful of pesticides and fertilisers are used in the production of the average t-shirt”. Seek organically produced materials. Use mechanical technology to create non-chemical decorative surface pattern. Create effects to replace materials and processes known to be harmful. Larr; back to overview. Rarr; sign up.
4 – Design to Reduce Energy and Water Use « Textiles Environment Design
http://www.tedresearch.net/4-reduce-energy-and-water-use
4 Design to Reduce Energy and Water Use. Energy consumption and water usage in the textile industry are extremely high and occur at each stage of the lifecycle of textiles at the production stage, in the use phase (where consumers use and care for textiles and garments) and at the end stage (which covers either disposal and/or re use of the material. Ldquo; 60% of the total energy consumption in the lifecycle of a t-shirt occurs in the use phase. i.e washing, ironing, drying ”. Allwood et al, 2006).
1 – Design to Minimise Waste « Textiles Environment Design
http://www.tedresearch.net/1-minimise-waste
1 Design to Minimise Waste. This strategy encourages designers to minimise the waste that is created in the textile industry, both pre and post consumer. It includes zero waste cutting and recycling but it also introduces the idea at the outset that we need to avoid producing stuff that doesnt work, that people dont want. Design for long-life and short-life applications. Design with enhanced aesthetic value. Larr; back to overview. Rarr; sign up.

Dr Hanna de la Motte. Acknowledging scarcity of materials and a system-based design approach that can be applied from the micro (molecular) to the macro (textural) scale, a garment blueprint made from 100% regenerated cellulose (Viscose and Tencel) creates options for assembly and disassembly of valuable coded fibres with a ‘minimal material’ approach TT8. At WS04 Material Connexion Milano. We’ve come back from WS04 in Milan with an overwhelming feeling that this can work. This is a significant moment for Trash-2-Cash for a number of reasons: we’re almost one year in, we’ve just completed our first official sharing of written knowledge between disciplines (through 4 internal reports),. Has begun, but most importantly we’re really starting to understand one another and our different contributions to the project. This has been difficult to achieve in the fir...

Textile Toolbox is TED’s web platform project for MISTRA Future Fashion. Our project within the research consortium aims to create systemic and profitable change within the fashion industry through ‘interconnected design thinking for sustainable textiles and fashion’, or New Design Processes. Why are we making something? What will change for the better? Where have these materials come from? What are they made of? What’s in them? How have they been processed and manufactured into fabric? This strategy exp...
