More on the ECB. More soul-searching at the ECB. Http:/ www.nytimes.com/2010/05/31/business/global/31deflation.html. Banking on Europe - the ECB's Uncharted Waters. Just in time for the 50th post of this less-than-illustrious blog, the Greek debt crisis reaches a fever pitch and her European neighbors step in to save the day. By sacrificing the ECB's independence in the short run, the European authorities have mortgaged away the biggest strength of its currency. This will hurt the value of the euro i...

Financial System Reform in the U.S.: What Happens Next. Columbia University's Committee on Global Thought. Yesterday hosted a lecture with two movers-and-shakers, past and present, in the world of financial regulation in the United States: former Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Arthur Levitt, and current Commodity Futures Trading Commission chief Gary Gensler. The topic: how to reform a regulatory system that fell asleep at the wheel and failed to detect a crisis. In the end, the discussion i...

the elastic thinker: Bottom-up Financial Reform
http://elasticthinker.blogspot.com/2010/08/bottom-up-financial-reform.html
The financial reform bill recently signed by President Obama will attempt to attack numerous regulatory gaps and enforce new consumer protections to prevent the next global economic crisis. But consider this thought from historian Niall Ferguson in his book "The Ascent of Money" (which, by the way, was written before the worst of the financial crisis hit):. The new reforms notwithstanding, it is difficult to assume these mistakes won't happen again when the "agents" in society, ranging from local police ...

Taxes and Spending: A Moral Gulf. Take, for example, an idea being pushed, ironically, by Democrats in Congress to legalize Internet gambling as a way of raising just $42 billion over 10 years. A skeptical look at TAM:London. The Amazing Meeting (TAM) is an awesome event. I say pretty certain because I've never been able to afford it. It's in the USA and is part of that Las Vegas Big Conference wizz-bang that puts it out of my price league. Surprisingly becoming a Doctor of Astrophysics didn't create the defacto independently wealthy lifestyle one might expect; Doctor Who lied to me. But now that it has come to London. and, well, I still can't afford it. Then later, starting 'big school' a seri...

The speech has been President Obama's most useful tool in tackling a political crisis. When it came to selling the health care bill or troop surge in Afghanistan, the slumping president has looked to his rhetorical skills to remind everyone how inspiring he is and why a large majority of Americans liked him in the first place. Being an atheist has nothing to do with my protest of the pope today. Trying to write more - so here's a quick missive before I head out the door to todays protest. Whilst ill as a very ill thing. I find it fascinating that it appears assumed that most people protesting the pope will be atheists. Is it true? Either way that assumption allows Joseph Ratzinger to diminish all criticism as being the work of 'aggressive atheists' hating God. So, that being the case, a defence of our way of life is just.
