One of Teignmouth's claims to fame is that it was the last place in England to be invaded by a foreign power when, in 1690, the French landed and burned the town down. The town lies on the northern side of the estuary of the River Teign in South Devon, 14 miles south of Exeter and 8 miles north of Torquay.
