Old Fellows For Obama. Wednesday, November 5, 2008. As my younger brother in Hawaii, Irish Mark, described the 2008 Presidential election outcome:. So, there we are: Hope and joy have re-awakened in America overnight, it would seem. Much of the rest of the world appears to agree. There have been so many well-written, constructive commentaries since yesterday's election, that it would be arrogant of me to attempt something comparable. Thomas Friedman says it beautifully in today's New York Times:. The GOP...

The trip back…and forth. Who I am, and where I lived →. August 1, 2009. Outside, only two or three boats were going around the pond, tilting wildly in the wind. A park worker in waders was fishing out both boats and giant clumps of algae from the middle of the pond. Old Fellows For Obama. Thursday, October 16, 2008. Some Thoughts Before the 2008 Election. What good are underlying principles if the proponents don't live by them? There are so many axes of culture in America, that, to treat only the liberal versus conservative scale is to vastly oversimplfy. I think the "haters" are the extremists on any axis. The depth of their hatred may be amplified by interaction with other cultural dimensions. Hatred impedes clear thinking and serves no one beneficially. We will h...

The trip back…and forth. Who I am, and where I lived. The Re-beginner, Part 2 →. August 25, 2009. It’s true, I’ve neglected this blog to write about. And apple dumplings from the family recipe vault. But I’m increasingly conscious of being an immigrant (though, unfortunately, not thinking like one), and of trying to tally up the starts of past lives while pursuing the present, new one. On the plane, I’d tried to begin reading the copy of Stieg Larsson’s. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It had been six years...

The trip back…and forth. The Re-beginner →. Who I am, and where I lived. August 4, 2009. One aspect of being an immigrant is that, until you find your bearings, you’re constantly second-guessing yourself. Is it really better here? What would I be doing. And, at some point,. Was this such a great idea? I’m obsessed with this. Not so, for my husband, who refuses to look back for any length of time. More out of envy than real interest, I asked J., “How do you do it? When was the last time you stared down a ...
