Monday, January 17, 2011. Belated Happy New Year! I'm embarrassed about how long it's been since I posted. Oh, well, life happens. Since it's still the beginning of the year, I wanted to post something in honor of Janus, and what could be better than garden gates? On my walks and bike rides around the neighborhood, I've been struck by what gates tell us about the occupants. I wouldn't want to meet the people who live here. Doesn't this make you feel welcome? Monday, May 31, 2010. A white-crowned pigeon visits. Actually, they're quite common in my neck of the woods, but they are considered "near threatened" throughout its range, which consists of the Caribbean islands and parts of coastal Central America. For once, habitat loss isn't the problem; it's hunting. At least they're protected now in the U.S. where they're only found in Florida south of Lake Okeechobee and through the Keys. Saturday, February 27, 2010. I wonder how this plant got its common name? Inspired by fellow South Florida blogger, TOG of Coral Gables who posted pix of a hedge of flame vine. I'm posting pix I took at Fairchild Garden this week. Generally, I'm not a fan of orange flowers, but this was a stunning sight. The vine is native to Brazil and is vigorous enough to smother trees, so it needs to be con. Trolled, but, as TOG's photos show, it makes a nice hedge, too. Posted by Terra Mirabilis. Located some 25 miles south of downtown Miami in the Redland agricultural area.
