Key Summit is located on the South Island near Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks. Some parts of the trail is for experienced hikers only. The surface is all dirt and rock so needless to say wear the proper foot gear. The highest point of the trail is near Harris Saddle of 1,300 m (4,300 ft). Need to be aware of avalanches when approaching the mountains.

In 1935.that's when the government decided to replace the tracks with a highway a few years after this natural disaster.
