1836-1888 は、幕末期の幕臣 剣術家、明治初期の侍従 書家として知られている。 江戸無血開城の直後、大目付となり、静岡県ほかで参事 県令を務め、1872年 明治5 に天皇側近となり、1882年 明治15 に宮内少輔を辞任した。 明治時代には、江戸無血開城での功績、天皇の側近などでその名声が鳴り響き、 幕末の三舟 の一人として数えられている 他の二舟は高橋泥舟と勝海舟である。
