Field Notes from the Republic: July 2013
http://fieldnotesfromtherepublic.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 22, 2013. Odds and Ends, Part 2. In my last post. I slapped together a bunch of random photos Id taken with the intent of blogging them. This is part two. Back to real posts soon, I promise. There are some very odd/oddly cool things about rural Texas. Or just Texas in general. From the same building, the Pork Hall of Honor! Sadly, this was a dead-end road, I think. This abandoned Walmart was the flagship abandoned store in a small town full of abandoned stores. I posted previously about the ...

Field Notes from the Republic: February 2015
http://fieldnotesfromtherepublic.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Monday, February 2, 2015. Back in days only slightly more recent than "of yore", my family and our friends the Galaskas would go to Old Forge in the Adirondacks each year to see the leaves change, have a picnic, and generally enjoy each others' company. But that is the nature of childhood. The obvious, undeniable flaw in our foundation. Our understanding and appreciation are forever stumbling young children running after their older sibling, experience. That memory is a tree, solid and unified above the ...

Field Notes from the Republic: My (Half) Year in Books
http://fieldnotesfromtherepublic.blogspot.com/2015/07/my-half-year-in-books.html
Monday, July 6, 2015. My (Half) Year in Books. I usually wait until the end of the year to summarize everything I've read. But that's gotten to be a chore now that I'm reading a little more. While I'm not reading quite enough to justify a monthly list like my friend Joel. I am taking a cue from him (as usual) and breaking my yearly list up in halves. If nothing else, it adds another post to my long-neglected blog. January got the year off to a good pace, but mostly because it involved less dense reads.

Field Notes from the Republic: Photos
http://fieldnotesfromtherepublic.blogspot.com/p/photos.html
I'm an enthusiastic semi-amateur photographer (but them who isn't these days, right? I grew up shooting with a venerable old Pentax K1000 film camera, and am largely, and chaotically, self-taught. Most would argue that this shows, and I would tend to agree. I focus primarily on landcscapes and wildlife/nature photography, but occasionally dabble in people and architecture. I currently shoot with Pentax cameras. See more of my photos online at:. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Field Notes from the Republic: April 2015
http://fieldnotesfromtherepublic.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 16, 2015. I’m trying to get myself back in the habit of writing regularly for non-work purposes, so I’m kicking off a new project with this post. I have waded into the shallows [i]. Of genealogy far enough to have accumulated more than just dates and locations, but actual details of my ancestor’s lives. I’m going to try to spend the next month or two telling the stories of my grandparents, great grandparents, and great-great grandparents [ii]. As the conflict intensified in 1943, Bernard ...

Field Notes from the Republic: June 2013
http://fieldnotesfromtherepublic.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Friday, June 28, 2013. Odds and Ends, Part 1. I’m also not sure how one concentrates ham, but apparently it’s very pleasing to the pig. One of the most archetypal double-edged swords of the information age is the ubiquitous cell phone camera [i]. It’s a fantastic tool for all those “I wish I had a camera” times, but the darker side is that utterly navel-gazing, life documentation obsession we’ve all developed [ii]. When in Rome…. For several years we have done a 5k in Houston with some friends. The p...

Field Notes from the Republic: Photo Project: Necrography
http://fieldnotesfromtherepublic.blogspot.com/2015/07/photo-project-necrography.html
Friday, July 31, 2015. One of the more valuable tools for modern amateur genealogists. Is the comprehensive (and undeniably creepy), website www.Findagrave.com. Like this Goth. Ok, actually, more like these Goths. The website relies on volunteers to take pictures, record information, and share it. It's like social media for dead people ( Gravebook? Oh God I'm going to hell.). You can even make requests if there's a grave with no picture. And people do this, on a regular basis. We actually have a really i...

Field Notes from the Republic: January 2015

Friday, January 23, 2015. Random Phone Pictures, 2014. Flooded Forest, Bear Creek Park, Houston TX. One of the most archetypal double-edged swords of the information age is the ubiquitous cell phone camera [i]. It’s a fantastic tool for all those “I wish I had a camera” times. The darker side is that utter navel-gazing, life documentation obsession we’ve all developed [ii]. When in Rome…. Winter Morning Rising, Rochester, NY. It still blows my mind to see Pal. Field Notes from the Republic: My Year in Books, 2014
http://fieldnotesfromtherepublic.blogspot.com/2015/01/my-year-in-books-2014_8.html
Thursday, January 8, 2015. My Year in Books, 2014. Once again, I'm. Paying homage to my friends at A Fiercer Delight and a Fiercer Discontent. And Are There Any More Cookies. As I present to you My Year in Books, 2014. This is a delightful yearly tradition in which I sink into deep literary envy as my friends' reading lists dwarf my feeble efforts [i]. I had a goal to read at least 3 books a month. In the carefree days of my youth [ii]. Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls - David Sedaris. Before it was a he...
