Foxley Manor is shown on old maps of Herefordshire. The grand building at the top of the valley was used as local headquarters and offices of the US and Canadian medical corps during World War Two. The nearest hamlet was Mansel Lacy with its pretty post office (complete with dovecote). Also nearby was Yazor (with its spired church):. Foxley valley, with its small stream and rolling hills, was a source of extra food - mushrooms, sorrel, horseradish and berries were plentiful - vital for a community still managing on war rations. It was also a paradise for children. Fallen timber was often sawn up and used in the barrack stoves. Food had to be searched for carefully:. Image: woods and stream.

Life was difficult for many people immediately after World War Two, but particularly for those who had been forced out of their homeland and had to learn a new language, earn a living, build a home. Attending other people's weddings. Soon got people asking about your own (this one was held in Weobley as the Foxley chapel was not registered for such ceremonies). Image: Weobley wedding car. One of the barracks was converted into a Roman Catholic chapel featuring a copy of the icon known as the "Black Madonna of Czestochowa" (below) - note the Polish eagle at the back and the painted stars on the ceiling.
