TEXTILE CONNECTION DESIGNER MAKERS - Sue Wassell

My mother did not sew but she did knit. She would make up her own patterns - stripes, checks and try different colours. She loved colour, as do I, and I think this is where my love for textiles comes from. Seeing an end of year City and Guilds Embroidery exhibition started me off on a wonderful journey of learning and I enjoyed all the diverse areas of textile and stitch. The following work is inspired by a favourite walk. Techniques used are applique, rust prints, machine and hand stitch.

I come from a long line of sewers and lace makers, and textiles continue to be my passion. Exploring surfaces through mixed media experiments is usually my starting point for new work. Combining this with stitch, ideas are developed from several sources. Water features often in my work, I find its properties both restorative and calming. Email: shirleyaldridge@blueyonder.co.uk. I trained as a fine artist but have always had a strong interest in textiles as a medium. The subject matter in my work conveys my interest in the urban environment and has incorporated imagery of dereliction, windows and more recently the stark concrete structures which are prominent in the redevelopment of cities. I take photographs of partially constructed buildings and existing architecture which inform my work. Email: jackie.creative@btinternet.com. Lines in the Landscape I (Set of 3). Lutrador, she...

I enjoy experimenting, trying out new techniques and pushing the boundaries. Surface texture, colour and form contribute greatly to my abstract approach. Currently, I am investigating folding and 3D construction, combining these with studies of rigid structures and grids which frame the view, inviting the observer to look from one plane to another. The 3D structures and folded books move, with the imagination, to abstract forms. Machine stitched, pelmet vilene, paper, Lutrador.
