In the first multiparty election in February 12, 1959 he won a seat from Mustang district defeating his first cousin Lalit Man Sherchan who ran as an independent. He was an Assistant Minister in BP Koirala's government. He was imprisioned with BP Koirala in Sundarijal for 8 years following the Royal coup in December 1960.
