Thanksgiving 2014 | Steadily on

Cooking, one day at a time. November 24, 2014. For an Orthodox Jew, accustomed to holidays with four-six large meals, laws about cooking and reheating and menu restrictions (Passover, anyone? Plus large Shabbat meals every week, Thanksgiving can seem like a picnic. And it is for my friends who live like that. Even for me, who makes smaller meals except for seders and Rosh HaShanah, it’s usually much easier. I wrote out a menu first, and used that to generate a shopping list. First step – shopping. You ar...

Cooking, one day at a time. Sukkot-Shemini Atzeret 5775 Post Mortem. Sukkot-Shemini Atzeret 5775 Post Mortem. October 19, 2014. The intermediate days of Sukkot got busy. We finally bought the new microwave and shopped and finalized invitations and so on. Wednesday, after a surprise brunch invitation by a young man in the neighborhood, I made Shabbat – lemon pepper chicken and roasted potatoes. Plus we did the last minute shopping. One is to eat the full meal there, but without saying the blessing of dwel...

Cooking, one day at a time. Veggie Box Week 5 Day 2. September 10, 2015. Very simple tonight. Fresh trout fillet, corn on the cob and snow peas, plus a salad of romaine and red onion. I also made a new bottle of vinaigrette. I don’t really like salad dressing, but my husband does. Veggie Box Week 5 Day 1. September 9, 2015. Yes, started a day late. Labor Day happened, and I still had broccoli and half an onion yesterday. Read more…. Veggie Box Week 4 Day 6. September 6, 2015. Veggie Box Week 4. Sauteed v...

Thanksgiving 2014 III | Steadily on
https://mamadeb.wordpress.com/2014/11/26/thanksgiving-2014-iii
Cooking, one day at a time. November 26, 2014. Today I did the proteins – the turkey plus eggs for the appetizer. I also determined that all the guests eat meat, so that won’t be an issue. I’ve been reading articles about vegetarians and Thanksgiving, so it’s in my head. I’ve fed any number of folks along the vegetarian spectrum, and none have left my table hungry. However. My 15lb turkey cooked perfectly in 75 minutes. And will be very easy to carve in the morning. Totally worth it. But it was also exha...

Thursday, 30 July 2015. Even Ho'Ezer Siman 66. Here is a quick outline of some interesting points we discussed re: denominations with regard to. 1 Value of coins covers:. C Tangentially; Orach Chaim. 2 Q: What is status of Machatzit Hashekel. Because we use half of KM. As opposed to KTz. B Not even a D'rabbanan. C Ergo a Zecher l'mikdash b'alma. D Contrast this to S'firat ha'Omer. Which is also a Zecher. Yet also has a B'rochoh. So it seems to be at least a full-fledged D'rabbanan. Or even a D'oraito.

Cooking, one day at a time. Curry and other spices. Curry and other spices. February 3, 2015. A few weeks ago, I wanted to make a curry but couldn’t find my curry powder, which was a commercial mixture. I’ve had bad luck with commercial curries anyway. I don’t use them enough, mainly. I cobbled together a mixture of cardamon, cinnamon, cumin, hot pepper flakes and powdered ginger. It didn’t taste totally like curry but it was pretty good. I used the combo plus black pepper on chicken and it was delicious.

Cooking, one day at a time. October 12, 2014. The holiday continues. We’re now in the days of. 8221; the intermediate days of Sukkot, when we are still commanded to eat in the sukkah, and wave the four species, but can basically do most forms of work. One of the problems with three day holidays is that I run out of clothes. It’s what happens with three days of synagogue. And this week meant eating in public, too. We are not required to eat in our sukkot in the rain. People who can situate their sukkot wh...

Cooking, one day at a time. November 25, 2014. This is just a progress report, but I am right on schedule. Last night, I made the starches – the stuffing and the sweet potato/pear dish. Neither are totally finished. I made the croutons for the stuffing by cubing a seedless rye loaf and toasting them in the oven. I used to be able to buy plain rye croutons, but I can’t find them and I don’t want to use seasoned ones. I also made a basic cranberry sauce, seasoned with a cinnamon stick, some ginger and a pi...

Thanksgiving 2014 Post-Mortem | Steadily on
https://mamadeb.wordpress.com/2014/11/27/thanksgiving-2014-post-mortem
Cooking, one day at a time. November 27, 2014. On the whole, I’d say it was pretty much a success. The only thing left to cook this morning were the onions for the eggs and onions (chopped liver without the liver. “The good parts” said my husband. It’s a family favorite.). I poured most of a box of low-sodium. Chicken stock over the stuffing. I put salt, oil and rosemary on the carrots and parsnips. And I carved the turkey. Traffic was terrible, so we got there an hour late. I got everything in the o...
