2013 Harvest
http://thatching-straw.co.uk/id6.html
Nigel Brown's - Thatching Straw. Owners of Thatched properties. After a difficult 2012 Autumn and a very cold and wet Spring this years corn has done exceptionally well showing an excellent length and quality although running about 4 weeks behind where it should be in a normal harvest year. When we did eventually start cutting we used two binders. A number of people helped us this year with the harvest from students, mechanics to member of the armed forces all helping with the stooking.

Maris Widgeon Flour
http://thatching-straw.co.uk/id21.html
Nigel Brown's - Thatching Straw. Owners of Thatched properties. Traditional Flour from an Old Fashioned wheat. Maris Widgeon is an old fashioned type of wheat primarily grown for its Straw, as it is known as a Long Straw and makes an excellent Thatching material, however it was one of the original bread making wheats. It is unlike the majority of newly developed wheat grown in the UK a hard wheat thus making it suitable for grinding into flour. Our Stoneground Wholemeal flour has nothing taken out of it,...
Thatching Straw Long Straw Combed Wheat Reed
http://thatching-straw.co.uk/id41.html
Nigel Brown's - Thatching Straw. Owners of Thatched properties. Our Quality Long Straw is grown from the traditional wheat variety of Maris Widgeon. It is grown with very little fertiliser to maximise the strength of the straw and to ensure it last when put on a roof. As the higher the nitrogen content of the straw i.e. fertiliser used to make the straw grow tall, the more quickly the straw will deteriate and turn to a muck heap on a roof! The dry straw is then barn stored for serveral months to season .

I work with both wheat reed and water reed. Traditional wheat reed varieties include Maris Widgeon, Red Standard, Victor, Square head Master, huntsmen and No.59. I also use Triticale which is a mixture between Wheat and Rye. Wheat reed is the traditional material used on a Dorset roof. To provide you with a brief insight as to what work is carried out I have included below some examples of work that I have undertaken along with descriptions of the process and method used. When thatching a roof we establi...
