This isn't newsworthy

Reporters and journalists get inundated with story ideas every week. Some ideas are good things to cover for the community, other ideas make for good journalism. Then there are ideas that just suck. There is nothing newsworthy about the story idea. Friday, February 12, 2010. In my small town schools rule. It's the largest employer in town and the reason many moved to this bedroom community. So school district complaints are common. Today a woman called because she has to wait in line like everybody else.

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day.: October 2009

http://mugsofvalor.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day. Wednesday, October 21, 2009. One of the comments following a set of awards mentioned my newspaper had a good mix of content and it was relevant to the readers. I had more pride in those comments than the award. You want variety, you've got it! There have been times in my career when I wanted to cover a statehouse - and I still think it would be fun. I have spent time as a city reporter, being dedicated to just one beat for a daily has tremendous advantages&...

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day. Wednesday, February 22, 2012. Death of a salesman (and newsman). I'm calling this week a failure for our business. Not that the failure specifically happened this week, but the reality of it came to light. To be economically viable, the newspaper (or news broadcast station) must also be practicable marketing tool for businesses. Specifically, a community newspaper must be a feasible means for local businesses to advertise. For the past few weeks, a local grocer...

http://mugsofvalor.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day. Thursday, December 24, 2009. Sit Stay. Good Boy. Forced to sleep on a twin bed at my parent's house for the holidays, I was able to convince my dog to sleep on a couch instead of on the bed with me. Ah, leg room. We often talk about "training" our sources and readers/listeners/viewers in the news biz. It sounds like we want Fido to do a new trick, or at least be obediant when guests are visiting. You don't have to have a full list of stories everyday on the Web...

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day. Tuesday, August 7, 2012. A vote cast in favor of this job. This job can get a little crazy and stressful (not how long it's been since the last blog post). This week (and it’s only Tuesday), there’s must have been a full moon because it’s been non-stop crazy. I’ve had to explain and justify why I won’t remove items from the police blotter (the pot wasn’t his, he was holding it for a friend) including why it’s wrong to bribe me to do so. With less than three hou...

http://mugsofvalor.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day. Tuesday, November 10, 2009. Yesterday was a good community journalism day. Yesterday I really felt I made a difference. A TIF Commission member who had a potential conflict of interest in the proposed project resigned. It was announced immediately at a meeting that included a public hearing. This came after a story and editorial in the previous week's paper about it. I also knew I was doing my job as a journalist as one of the family members of the commissioner...

http://mugsofvalor.blogspot.com/2011/05/osam-bin-who.html

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day. Monday, May 2, 2011. I felt sick this morning. Sick from dissatisfaction of what was expected of me - due in part of what some people think our readers expect from us. His death has not changed our world, though. Not near the way so many things have changed our world. There were no U.S. casualties in the battle that took bin Laden's life. Yet, on the dawn of bin Laden's death, my publisher (who is a rarity in that he came up on the editorial side to the publish...

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. To those who have ever grumbled about pay, layoffs or other general cuts in the newspaper world, I'm right there with you. But have you ever sat down and thought about what all this costs? Frustrated with the way things were going and sparked by my own entrepreneurial, I wrote out what I thought a newspaper should be: how it operates, how it fits into a small communities, etc. I've got a little more respect for those in the HR/accou...

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day.: Arrogance

http://mugsofvalor.blogspot.com/2011/06/arrogance.html

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day. Thursday, June 30, 2011. Maybe arrogance is the answer for newspapers. Recently I was outside a fast food restaurant and saw the USA Today newspaper rack. USA Today usually impresses me with its front page. It did again this day. I wanted to buy a copy for a story on the front page because apparently I was too lazy to use my phone app to find it. Maybe this is really why single copy sales are down - who carries cash (let alone change) anymore? Anytime you charg...

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day.: This one's on me

http://mugsofvalor.blogspot.com/2010/10/this-ones-on-me.html

Cold Coffee: Afterthoughts of the news day. Thursday, October 28, 2010. This one's on me. There are some days you've just got to love this job. This morning I started out touring the mayor's new business - in another city. I agree that he couldn't find the building to fit the need for this wine club he started, but I'm sure he is going to receive some backlash from the community for not investing in the hometown. That will be humorous. He's too busy getting his new wine store ready in the metro.

Playing with Comedians | three comedians, one role-playing game, a total fiasco

Skip to main content. Skip to secondary content. Three comedians, one role-playing game, a total fiasco. While several professional standup comedians were working on their material at a northern NJ recording studio, they came upon some fellow podcasters enjoying a role-playing game. What follows is a film project dedicated to documenting what happens when three newcomers to the hobby attempt to play their first rpg. Three normal guys with absolutely no idea what they are about to get themselves into.

Right or wrong, not Christian. Confused enough. Thanks. Top: “God allows evil because of free will”. Bottom: “Romans 8:20: Creation was condemned to lose its purpose, not of its own will, but because God willed it to be so…”. Submitted by Anonymous via ask. Actually I had not thought about that verse in such a way. Truly, in some aspects. I have come across a few believers like that….If you pray for me I’ll think for both of us.
