Sunday, February 03, 2008. The governor and I. Life is full of rules and covering an elected official is an exercise fraught with conditions. Allow me to explain. This past week Governor Patrick was in the area for two days. I like the guy. I voted for him. One of the reasons he was attractive as a candidate was his grassroots campaign and style. That's Thirty: Why print is still essential

http://www.thatsthirty.blogspot.com/2006/07/why-print-is-still-essential.html

Sunday, July 02, 2006. Why print is still essential. The interesting thing about journalism today is that television is considered by many people as the top of the ladder. Many journalists aspire for a television career and certainly the public thinks of TV news as being the desirable of the mediums. And frankly when there were people such a Edward R. Murrow working, TV had great potential. Under the current market conditions though, it no longer has. Local newscasts in markets such as ours (108th in cou...

http://www.thatsthirty.blogspot.com/2007/07/baaad-language.html

Friday, July 13, 2007. I got this today.what do you think? What fascinates me is if so many people are concerned about language why are so many recordings, movies and television shows with adult language so popular? Do we have a double standard? Are we willing to tell a pollster that we are against profanity in one venue but enjoy it in another? SHOULD THE FCC ISSUE FINES FOR SINGLE EXPLETIVES? Conducting Talk Show interviews on this topic is Morality in Media President Robert Peters. The survey was cond...

That's Thirty: July 2006

http://www.thatsthirty.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html

Saturday, July 22, 2006. I've not posted here for too long a period. My apologies. Both a heavy work load and a week off have contributed to a lack of activity. I caved in this week and wrote part of my editorial column about the president's veto of the stem cell research bill. I was a little desperate. I think writing about state events from a western Massachusetts perspective is legitimate, but I always feel that I'm cheating when I write something that is national. Hey, it happens. 2006 by G. Mich...

That's Thirty: Some folks just don't get it

http://www.thatsthirty.blogspot.com/2006/07/some-folks-just-dont-get-it.html

Saturday, July 01, 2006. Some folks just don't get it. I received a press release the other day from a candidate who was making an important announcement on a Saturday night at 8 pm. I called his campaign guy and explained I would be happy to write about it but I couldn't attend. In fact, probably no one from the local press would attend. Here's a golden rule in dealing with local press: do your research and give them an event they want when they want it. Television, though, hates local politics because ...

That's Thirty: Why I hate TV...sometimes

http://www.thatsthirty.blogspot.com/2006/09/why-i-hate-tvsometimes.html

Monday, September 04, 2006. Why I hate TV.sometimes. The other day, I had to go to the dedication of a new building, the headquarters of a non-profit that does a lot of good work. A local congressman had been invited and I noticed the dedication was running late. He had not yet shown up, which is typical among many elected officials. I thought we were back on schedule, but nope. There was more of a delay. Then I noticed a TV newscrew walking in. Print is still the medium that endures. It's portable&#...

Monday, April 29, 2013. More art from Inertron. I meant to post these two pieces of art from my fanzine Inertron. The first is a comic page by my fellow UMass student Scott Paauw. My caricature is wearing striped pants! Others depicted in the strip include Steven Cohen, Michael Moyle and Kevin Roy, all members of the UMass Science Fiction Society. This is the original complete with glue stains and white-out. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Places you need to go.

Out of the Inkwell

http://outoftheinkwell.blogspot.com/2012/12/time-for-some-dvd-reviews-samaritan.html

Sunday, December 16, 2012. Time for some DVD reviews! Samuel L. Jackson has a strong work ethic and has appeared in many films playing a very similar badass. Sometimes he's a good guy, sometimes he's a bad guy, but frequently he is the same type of character. That is the curse of being a movie star. Once you've established a successful persona that's what producers — and audiences — want from you. What complicates matters is that Foley has met a young woman, Iris (Ruth Negga), and has entered into a caut...

Monday, January 28, 2013. Rob Schneider was a gentleman and someone I could talk to for a long time as he really is a student of comedy. Rob Schneider is more than a successful comedian. Speak to him for just a few minutes and you realize he is a true historian of comedy. The former "Saturday Night Live" cast member, who has starred and co-starred in a string of popular movies will be performing at the Hu Ke Lau in Chicopee for two shows on Dec. 28. Schneider also enjoys the freedom of performing live on...

Tuesday, June 26, 2012. Recently I received the "The Three Stooges: The Ultimate Collection" for review. The following is what I wrote for the newspapers I edit with some additional information. Many times when I receive a boxed set of a series of movies or television shows to review, the reaction around the office is "Why would spend $100 on that? When "The Three Stooges: The Ultimate Collection" came into the office, though, I had to fight to keep it. The Stooges made the shorts at Columbia, which had ...

Monday, August 06, 2012. The 2012 Great New England Air Show. This C-47 transport plane was used in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. In the collection of the American Airpower Museum, it was given the nickname "Second Chance. The spartan interior meant room for more troops and more supplies. There's little room in the cockpit. My dad's last plane, a B-52 bomber. The vertical take-off Osprey drew crowds. I love nose art, this one on a WWII vintage Avenger fighter. For me growing up on and near air bases...

Sunday, April 28, 2013. The cover of my first edition of Inertron. A fanzine made me what I am today – for better or worse. Perhaps I can trace my desire to write back to my love of reading and my visit with noted children’s writer and environmentalist Thornton W. Burgess when I was in first grade. Perhaps it was the good grades I received on reports I wrote in the sixth grade. Perhaps it was in the eighth grade, when my English teacher assigned me to be the editor of a “literary” magazine. It wasn&#8217...

all Gyan BIG & small

All Gyan BIG and small. Wednesday, September 12, 2012. Refesh.restart and here we go. After a really really long time, coming back to the blogging world, and hope to post regularily. While I am at it, I am also trying to clean up some of my old post (for colour and font issues) due to the new template :). While I must have lost most of my readers, I recollect that a blog is not written with the intent of gaining readers, rather as a place to express one's own ideas. Links to this post. Tying it all up.

We got through Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest airports, faster than we did RDU. Score one for the Brits. The food service on the return flight, Heathrow to RDU, was far superior to the food service from RDU to Heathrow. Another one for the Brits.
