book leaves: Tyneside tales
http://emmelleb.blogspot.com/2010/01/tyneside-tales.html
Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Book is a collection of short stories resulting from the best entries to a writing competition, aiming to promote local writers. There are other 'Tales' books arising from other cities in the UK. The brief was to write about contemporary life in Newcastle and to capture the essence of the people and environs. I enjoyed reading theses stories a lot - some were very good and all made me feel rather homesick! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Sunday, September 23, 2012. Explores the lives of 4 US and 1 Canadian expats who come across each other in Budapest, their personalities, relationships and their connection with Hungary and their homeland. They arrive hoping to be part of 'something' happening in the newly-opened-to-the-west city, but can't stop themselves mis-guidedly feeling that Prague is where it is all happening instead. Interesting more for the description of life in Budapest, and got a wee bit bored with the characters by the end.

Wednesday, November 04, 2009. 2006 English translation by Laurie Thompson, 2009. A really great read. Not a Wallander detective novel. After a number of years living an isolated life on an island, Frederik Welin finds his past catching up with him. Describes F's reactions, reasonings and the frailties of humankind in an interesting and thought provoking way. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Wednesday, December 30, 2009. One in the series of crime books featuring Tempe Brennan, a forensic anthropologist. An entertaining, light read - a pretty formulaic crime novel set in North Carolina. Thoughts on interaction design. This book seeks to explore Interaction Design (in general, HCI. And web-based design), its definitions and to put a case forward for its importance in developing a good, 'poetic' experience and relationship between user and item. Breaks the book up into 4 sections:. Virus It de...

book leaves: The laws of simplicity
http://emmelleb.blogspot.com/2010/02/laws-of-simplicity_13.html
Saturday, February 13, 2010. The laws of simplicity. I enjoyed this book although it seems that many others at the UX book club didn't. Maybe too whimsical? I thought Maeda had some lovely turns of phrase and writes nicely on thought-provoking ideas. In 100 pages, he outlines 10 laws to act as guide to design simplicity in the digital context. 1-3: Reduce, Organise, Time are the basics, focusing on designing. 4-6: Learn, Differences, Context are intermediate, more subtle in meaning. The laws of simplicity.

Monday, April 12, 2010. Rocket surgery made easy. The sub-title gets to the nub of the subject matter of this book: the do-it-yourself guide to finding and fixing usability problems. In his trademark style, SK outlines how you can ensure that your web sites work by carrying out user testing yourself. Some good tips and reasons why help you to make a case to bosses/clients as to the validity of doing testing. Aim to tweak to fix issues rather than feeling that a whole redesign is required.

book leaves: The best Australian stories 2008
http://emmelleb.blogspot.com/2010/03/best-australian-stories-2008.html
Thursday, March 18, 2010. The best Australian stories 2008. 26 short stories - a mixed bag of styles and locations and subject matter - which made for a good read and nice introduction to new authors. Some resonated with me more than others - Nam Le, Nicholas Shakespeare (read before), Marion Halligan. And others) but there were only a couple I didn't enjoy reading. In her introduction says, ".I would like to think that there is something still specifically Australian. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
