Scribbling in the margins: January 2014
http://scribbling-inthemargins.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Scribbling in the margins. Musings on the Historical Novel and life as it happens. Thursday, 30 January 2014. On a recent trip to India I re-read M.M.Kaye's. 65279;. 65279;. Entry into the Hall. It is easy to remember great Indian epic poetry here, that sourced from history and legends; poetry that contains the markers of history, if embellished; these were poems of bravery, love, great deeds, glory, sacrifice and death. 65279;. The fortress covers a huge site. The Golconda Fort and its pal...

Sally Zigmond: Christopher Seymour Roff (May 1947-June 2015)
http://sallyzigmond.blogspot.com/2015/06/christopher-seymour-roff-may-1947-june.html
Tuesday, June 9, 2015. Christopher Seymour Roff (May 1947-June 2015). He was living recently with the best carers he's ever had: Bob and Brenda. They, too, are totally devastated. Ever heard of a beefy bricklayer? I have. I salute them. If I can I will recommend them both for an award. He was also the family encyclopaedia. He knew the date in detail of every family member's birthday. His memory was phenomenal. He could give you chapter and verse of every childhood holiday we ever had. Welcome to my blog.

Sally Zigmond: Life goes on.
http://sallyzigmond.blogspot.com/2015/07/life-goes-on.html
Wednesday, July 1, 2015. For anyone not used to Northern Britain, moorland and its driving sleet and blasting winds any time between October and May, it can take a bit of getting used to. It is often bleak in June. But then, I am an adopted northerner and wouldn't live anywhere else. Hadrian's Wall is less than a two hour drive from our doorstep. Here you will find - not the White Rose of Yorkshire but the fried egg and tomato sauce breakfast that is Northumbria's stunning flag:. Welcome to my blog.

A fool on a hill...: August 2015
http://suepurkiss.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Saturday, 29 August 2015. The Century Trilogy, by Ken Follett. First up, apologies for not having posted for such a long time. It's been a busy few weeks - particularly the bit where we had two nine year olds to stay! With not much time or head-space for writing blogs. The boxed set. (See how big they are? And there are a lot. What Follett does is to use the fortunes of these families as a vehicle for nothing less than relating the entire histo...

A fool on a hill...: June 2015
http://suepurkiss.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Monday, 22 June 2015. Congratulations to Tanya Landman, winner of the 2015 Carnegie Medal! The Carnegie Medal is the big one for writers of children's books - the one we'd all like to win. (Well, we'd like to win any prize - but this one would be the cherry on anyone's cake! Tanya Landman earlier today at the Carnegie presentation. But to return to the book - I reviewed it not long after it first came out, and you can see that review here.

A fool on a hill...: February 2015
http://suepurkiss.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Wednesday, 25 February 2015. Just a word first about that term, junior novels. They're sometimes called 'middle-grade' novels, and they are - very approximately - intended for 9-12 year olds. (Many of them could be, and are, enjoyed equally by adults - don't dismiss books because they happen to be on the children's shelves in the bookshop! And 'Young Adult' books even more so.). Fairy-tales do sometimes come true - don't they? This book is a ve...

A fool on a hill...: January 2015
http://suepurkiss.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Friday, 23 January 2015. Trouble on Cable Street, by Joan Lingard. Anyone who was teaching English in the late 70s/early 80s - and probably after that - will remember the name of Joan Lingard. She wrote Across the Barricades. Concerns Isabella, whose mother is Spanish. She has two brothers. One has chosen to fight in the Spanish Civil War for the Republicans: the other, by contrast, is attracted by Oswald Mosley's increasingly powerful ...And a...

A fool on a hill...: Liberty's Fire, by Lydia Syson
http://suepurkiss.blogspot.com/2015/05/libertys-fire-by-lydia-syson.html
A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Tuesday, 26 May 2015. Liberty's Fire, by Lydia Syson. Like Lydia Syson's previous books, A World Between Us. And That Burning Summer. Liberty's Fire is set during the Paris Uprising of 1871, when the workers, starving and desperate after being besieged by the Prussians, declared that the people would govern the city through a Commune. It's a time about which I knew virtually nothing: after reading the book, I know a great deal more! The cloud h...

A fool on a hill...: Marbeck and the Gunpowder Plot, by John Pilkington
http://suepurkiss.blogspot.com/2015/06/marbeck-and-gunpowder-plot-by-john.html
A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Monday, 15 June 2015. Marbeck and the Gunpowder Plot, by John Pilkington. Before he took to writing novels, John Pilkington wrote television scripts and plays for radio and theatre. Clearly, he has used the skills he learnt there in creating his historical thrillers: they are tightly plotted and full of reversals and surprises, with cliffhangers which are - literally, in the case of some of the characters - to die for! 15 June 2015 at 03:57.
