Exploring Nature's Connections. Skip to primary content. Pearl Crescents: A Flirtation Consummated. July 20, 2015. Animal species instinctively behave in ways that help further the survival of their species. Inevitably, this means spending much of their time eating and reproducing. Recently I had the opportunity to observe such behavior in Pearl Crescent butterflies. Pearl Crescent sipping nectar from Indian Hemp (Apocynum cannabinum). About HORTravels and About Me. Exploring the horticultural beauty in every adventure. May 7, 2015. Flowers in Spring. Scott Arboretum. Everywhere I go people are sneezing. Spring seemed to happen all at once and the pollen from everything is coating cars, pavement and, apparently, nostrils in a dusky green film. You’re at the best WordPress.com site ever. Why Grass Free Yards? Why Grass Free Yards? In Florida, grass lawns don’t really make sense. A pretty lawn requires a lot of water and fertilizers and often pesticides. Xeriscaping with native plants saves water, chemicals, time, and money in the long term. Groundcovers usually don’t need to be mowed. They are great for kids and attracting wildlife such as butterflies. Http:/ www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/yards/. Http:/ pinellas.fnpschapters.org/. You’re at the best WordPress.com site ever. Why Grass Free Yards? Getting Rid of My Turf. July 13, 2012. A few months ago I joined the Florida Native Plant Society. You’re at the best WordPress.com site ever. Why Grass Free Yards? 6 Months in – Yard Tour. January 9, 2013. Here is the front entrance. I have removed a small corner of the front yard and made it into a native plant/ butterfly garden. The violet leaves are fun to use in soup because they are heart shaped. Close up of the herb pot. It holds water well because I drilled ...

You’re at the best WordPress.com site ever. Why Grass Free Yards? Monthly Archives: July 2012. July 23, 2012. July 19, 2012. I just finished planting 14 one gallon potted sunshine mimosa plants. These are a native Florida plant and are really fun. The leaves fold up when you touch them, and they have pretty purple flower that attract butterflies. I first dug a hole, weeded around the hole a bit, and then planted the mimosa. Finally I put dirt or mulch around the plant to hold the cardboard down. A few mo...

Gardens-In-The-Sand: Triple digit heat

http://gardens-in-the-sand.blogspot.com/2015/07/triple-digit-heat.html

Gardens in the sand is an exploration of xeriscape gardening. Set in the middle of a hawthorn thicket, it's a process of removing thorns and planting flowers and vegetables. Thursday, July 30, 2015. It's been reaching 100 and above for what seems like weeks now. In truth, I really missed the heat over the past couple of years when it failed to reach our normal highs. Finally spotted a bug. Not sure why this particular rudbeckia seems not attractive to the pollinators. They were purple last year. Gardens ...

http://gardens-in-the-sand.blogspot.com/2014/08/pests-weeds-and-wildflowers.html

Gardens in the sand is an exploration of xeriscape gardening. Set in the middle of a hawthorn thicket, it's a process of removing thorns and planting flowers and vegetables. Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Pests, Weeds, and Wildflowers. I've written before about how difficult it is to garden here. I keep trying, though. My echinacea patch is disappearing down these holes in the sand. Nice big melons on dying vines, watermelons don't grow very good with no roots. Corn ear worms are eating my sandwich tomatoes.
