The Outdoor Kid

Sunday, January 9, 2011. It's been a very long time since I've made a post on this site. So long that winter has come again. Minnesota has long winters with lots of cold and snow, and this winter is no exception to the general rule. There are plenty of wintertime activities and sports that can be enjoyed outside, but for those really cold days when going outside isn't an option, why not bring nature to you? We get a variety of birds at our feeder. Below is a male Pine Grosbeak. Chickadees, and an occasio...

The Outdoor Kid: June 2009

http://the-outdoor-kid.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 26, 2009. The Old Gumbie Cat. Artwork of Beatrix Potter. I have a Gumbie Cat in mind, her name is Jennyanydots;. Her coat is of the tabby kind, with tiger stripes and leopard spots. All day she sits upon the stair or on the steps or on the mat;. She sits and sits and sits and sits- and that's what makes a Gumbie Cat! But when the day's hustle and bustle is done,. Then the Gumbie Cat's work is but hardly begun. And when all the family's in bed and asleep,. The curtain-cord she likes to wind, ...

The Outdoor Kid: The deer rut

http://the-outdoor-kid.blogspot.com/2009/11/deer-rut.html

Friday, November 6, 2009. With November comes the peak of the deer rut, or mating season, in Minnesota. Male deer (bucks) are rubbing the bark off of trees and making scrapes to mark their turf and assert their dominence. Even on the fringes of the big woods they are active! Below is a picture of what one rascal of a buck did to our apple tree in the yard at 10:45am and before my very eyes:. Below is one of this buck's many scrapes:. So much for being sneaky with the camera! I am a traditional Catholic w...

The Outdoor Kid: August 2009

http://the-outdoor-kid.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 6, 2009. Time for another post on my favorite subject of loons. Last night out on the lake we came across a couple of loons acting rather strangely. They were imitating each other and splashing about in the water in some kind of display which seemed almost like a courtship display only being carried on outside the courting season. They seemed to me very like children, one of whom is imitating the other to make him nutty! Links to this post. Wednesday, August 5, 2009. Gus - the Theatre Cat.

The Outdoor Kid: July 2009

http://the-outdoor-kid.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 29, 2009. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, and no words of mine can do justice to the flowers, I will leave it to the viewer to exclaim over the beauty of God's handiwork. But when you get outside, just don't forget to sniff the flowers! Links to this post. Labels: older outdoor kids. Monday, July 27, 2009. Evening on Rainy Lake. Evening is a beautiful time to be out on the lake! But there are a lot more critters that use lakes than just ducks and loons, and we saw some of these...

The Outdoor Grill - The Outdoor Grill

When the summer months approach, temperatures begin reaching into the 90's by noon or a little later, at least in the Southwest. The grocery stores are aleady preparing thick steaks and boneless ribs for the summer BBQ; tempting us with prices that are below the normal. (Wonder where the prices will be when the summer really arrives.) So this is the time to start looking at our outdoor grill. Built-in Grill or Dome Top Weber. Perhaps something that will cook enough food for a family or four or five to re...
