The 1950s were characterized by consensus and conformity. America had become transformed into a consumer society due to the technological and economic improvements. Social conditions also changed due to myriad tensions of the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam conflict and the assassination of JFK. LBJ sign major civil rights legislation as part of his Great Society program. Nixon's presidency would bring an end to the war in Vietnam but also American distrust in government.
