http://jimzlinks.blogspot.com/2007/11/burn-injury-equals-system-failure.html
Online Tools for Students of Nursing. Burn injury = system failure. With burns, especially large ones, it's not just about skin anymore. It's really a case of "all systems are NOT go.". While we focus our concern on the terror, pain and disfigurement our patients may experience, our study of burns provides an opportunity to review and integrate our knowledge of the many systems that can be disrupted by severe trauma to skin. I've only picked a few resources this time, but they're good ones. The first.

jimZlinks: got acidosis....?
http://jimzlinks.blogspot.com/2007/12/got-acidosis.html
Online Tools for Students of Nursing. You know how to spot the difference between respiratory and metabolic acidosis. But how about the different causes of metabolic acidosis? Can an understanding of lab values give us clues to the cause? One of the clues is the "anion gap," the difference between positive ions (cations) and negative ions (anions). The simple way to figure this is to add up the positive ions (Na, K) and subtract from this the sum of negative ions (Cl, HCO3). Anion gap: 141 - 129 = 12.

Online Tools for Students of Nursing. Here's a good place to start for an understanding fluids and electrolytes. It comes from the Virtual Naval Hospital's guide to treatment of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. I'll just quote one part of it as an example of how IV fluids are used in therapy. Remember that in heat stroke/exhaustion there is primarily loss of water without electrolytes. The approach might be different if electrolytes were lost with fluid, as in vomiting or diarrhea.
