Aasha was founded in 1989 by a group of care givers of people with mental illness who came together to create one of India's first family organisations. These were caregivers of a child at times children, sibling/s, spouse and relative diagnosed with mental illness. Padma Bhushan Dr. Sarada Menon was instrumental in giving these caregivers a push to start Aasha. The last two decades at a glance:. Aasha runs a 40 bedded Residential Rehabilitation home for men and women in Tambaram Chennai. A safe, clean and healthy living atmosphere with open spaces for recreational activities, televisions and sanitary washrooms are provided. We have an optimal staff of 10 and visiting psychiatrists to monitor the residents' progress. Aasha aims to engage, empower, rehabilitate and reintegrate individuals with mental illness and provide support to families and caregivers". Raquo; Provides Vocational Training.

On August 6th 2001, 25 mentally ill people were burnt alive in a fire at a home in Erawadi, Tamil Nadu. They could not escape as they were chained to their beds. This tragedy shocked the nation and there was worldwide condemnation on this gross violation of human care. They did not die in vain. Commemorating Erawadi - 9 years on.
