Laquo; Notes on the Midwinter Bump. The Librarian Design Challenge. This past Wednesday I had the unique privilege of doing a talk with Richard Kong. At the Small Public Library Management Institute. Down in Springfield. SPLMI (it’s a library event, so it’s gotta have an acronym, innit? Spend three hours explaining to this eager group of roughly 60 librarians everything they need to know about current and upcoming tech trends. I’ve taken to calling this slide deck The Beast:. Archive for the 'ebooks' Category. Laquo; Previous Entries. Notes on the Midwinter Bump. Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013. For those unfamiliar with the Midwinter Bump, I thought I’d post a more thorough explanation of what this crazy project is all about. Essentially, I’m looking to quantify the ways librarian efforts contribute to book sales. What I need: I need a co-conspirator from each awards committee. In order to conspire properly, I’ll need you to […]. Posted in Conference Notes.

We’ve settled into a good routine, using a mixture of experienced volunteers and Computer Lab staff to […]. IOLUG 2009: Social Library is People! Friday, November 13th, 2009.

As the #hcod debate has continued to grow, many concerned librarians, authors, and readers are beginning to move from discussion to direct action. One of these motions calls for a direct boycott of HarperCollins. This is the kind of move that revolutions are founded on. But I’m not sure it’s the kind of move our […]. My email to HarperCollins. Laquo; Twittering @ Your Library. Plan C: Tech Trends Beyond Social Networking and Web 2.0. Just call me Tenzing Norbook, I guess. Omniscient marketing guru Seth Godin turned his eye toward the eternal question of how libraries should remain relevant in the digital age. They can’t survive. Here’s my proposal:. Train people to take intellectual initiative. Sums my reaction to this rather eloquently:. So, wait… we *should* be helping ppl learn to find and contextualize info? Gee thanks, Seth. All this ...

I shared this earlier on the lis-pub-libs mailing list, but on reflection I think it’s important enough to post more broadly. The Old Woods: Mornings

http://bookowl.blogspot.com/2010/01/mornings.html

Friday, January 15 @ 9:34 PM. Lately mornings have been lovely. I think part of it has to do with the angle of the sunlight at certain points of the morning. It's also been nice because of new breakfast recipes, fresh tea from Gong Fu, and the weekend delight of doing nothing but reading in your pajamas. Dan's favorite books ». Sunday, April 18, 2010. Thing # 23 Pearls. This is only the beginning. That is the sentence I would use to describe my reponse to the 23 Things experience. I would certainly take this journey again because I believe I have only paddled around in the shallow water. The only improvement I would suggest is add more. The biggest surprise for me was how much I learned from my classmates. Their perspectives, ideas, and discovery of other gems enriched my experience and encouraged me to push myself further.
