The Apple Slice

Friday, December 20, 2013. This Tastes Like Soup. Last week, I posted Scott's speech. From Dad's 60th birthday party and this week, I have posted my own speech from the evening. It's not your typical speech/roast but rather the speech is in the form of a "book" that Dad wrote on the subject of soup. I picked my way through the book and picked a few 'selections' and read them to the birthday crowd. Here is the speech:. 8220;This Tastes Like Soup – A Guide to the Perfect Bowl of Soup”. It’s not pretty.

The Apple Slice: June 2013

http://theappleslice.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 25, 2013. I was thinking this week of a vivid memory I had when I was four years old. I was in the back of the big black Econline van with Mom at the wheel. Becky, who was a couple of weeks old, was strapped in beside me. We had to stop at the one-lane Bailey bridge to let another car go by. As we waited to let the car over the wooden planked bridge, I looked over at Becky and wondered “Will she ever grow up? In the next moment we were over the bridge and time seemed to accelerate. This was...

Thursday, March 28, 2013. The Trip Out East - Part One. The path down memory lane is well trodden in this blog. It’s not that I am living in the past but the past always seems to be lingering. It could be a smell that takes me back to Oma’s house, a picture that sparks a forgotten funny story, or a taste of something that transports you back to your childhood. We were loaded up in the family station wagon. Becky and Ally were in the back of the station wagon and were setting up Barbie land. It was at thi...

The Apple Slice: June 2012

http://theappleslice.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 14, 2012. And people came out. The loon squinted his beady little black eyes. The people were kids and were wildly streaming out of this great yellow beast. This startled the loon all the more and he did what any loon would do in a scary situation: he dove under water and hoped that when he came back up, everything would be peaceful and pristine once again. Fair Glen – The Story. The class was nicely seated in their clean shiny desks. The whole year stretched before us! 8220;Oh. Not un...

The Apple Slice: December 2012

http://theappleslice.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 21, 2012. The Call of the Wild. It was a wild place to begin with. The small group of cottages seemed like an idyllic spot, but in reality, the grounds and lake were teeming with wild animals. The snapping turtle population alone probably outnumbered the nearby population of Parry Sound. For one week in August, a group of cottagers confronted the wild in an epic man versus nature battle. This brave (and wild) group of cottagers were the Bruinekools. The Bruinekools do not like mice.

Saturday, December 20, 2014. Generations A picture from the past. A picture of FIVE generations from 90 years ago. This picture was taken by the newspaper company and distributed throughout parts of Holland. It read: "In the community of Zwaagwesteinde is a family where five generations are all present. This is really special.". OLDEST - Grietje Klaver 1830-1927. Tryntje VanderLand - 1852-1935. Grietje deJong - 1875-1956. Jacoba Postma - 1902-1962. Kerri's Korner: birds part#2

http://kerris-korner.blogspot.com/2015/07/birds-part2.html

Tuesday, July 14, 2015. With the laying hens moved out into the field, I could now go on the hunt for some show birds to put in the green coop. I started an intense search for a male red golden pheasant. These beauties are hard to find. Our male red golden pheasant - photo credit: Andrew. We added silkies and two female red golden pheasants to the coop. The silkies make you smile with their puff of feathers on their head. They have a calm, quite character which helps balance the skittish pheasants. Near ...

Kerri's Korner: August 2015

http://kerris-korner.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 27, 2015. The summer of the pregnant Goat. When we decided to buy a goat, I started looking for a pregnant goat so we could have the experience of watching little kid(s) being born and raising them. I found a lady on kijiji who assured me that the goat she was selling was pregnant and so we bought Mabel, a skittish sort of goat but we had high hopes she would make a great mother. Every morning I would peer through our windows, hoping to see a little kid. I carefully watched for any signs...

Kerri's Korner: boys and their bugs... and worms... and fascination with any living creature

http://kerris-korner.blogspot.com/2015/06/boys-and-their-bugs-and-worms-and.html

Monday, June 15, 2015. Boys and their bugs. and worms. and fascination with any living creature. I ran out of those weeks ago when the weather turned warm. Bugs that fly, bugs that crawl, bugs that think they are safe under a rock or a log - there's no place where they can hide when these boys are around. Habitats are created. Words like thorax, broken wings, and antenae are over- heard in little boy conversations. Playing all day long.their bath water is dirty! June 17, 2015 at 11:26 AM.

Kerri's Korner: Surviving the Terrible Twos

http://kerris-korner.blogspot.com/2015/06/surviving-terrible-twos.html

Saturday, June 20, 2015. Surviving the Terrible Twos. This is one blog post I feel very qualified to write. Four out of five of our boys have been troublesome toddlers. After birth they have given us about enough time to work through the sleep-deprived newborn stage and then they start walking. A day later they start running. Fast, curious, fiercely independent, unafraid, energetic, and trips to the ER mark these eventful days. Its too high" or "I might get hurt" are unheard of in our household. Realize ...

Kerri's Korner: Cesar - our fresh air kid

http://kerris-korner.blogspot.com/2015/08/cesar-our-fresh-air-kid.html

Saturday, August 1, 2015. Cesar - our fresh air kid. This year our family decided to look into the Fresh Air Fund, an organization that takes kids from New York and places them with families throughout Ontario during the summer. This allows kids to experience life outside of the city and in many cases, get relief from the pressures in their family life. This is something that my family did while I was growing up and was something I looked forward to doing with our own family. Cesar, age 7, from the Bronx.

Kerri's Korner: January 2015

Saturday, January 31, 2015. My dad surrounded by four daughters and a wife for many years. GUYS have joined him! Wednesday, January 28, 2015. This week has marked the 70th year since the Liberation of the dreadful Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Watching the events surrounding the 70th Anniversary made me think of another liberation story I had recently read. This story is so beautiful that it is worth sharing. The following Liberation story is found in this book. As far as religion was concerned, I'd been...

Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Traveling through Europe.in our imaginations! Traveling" through Europe during this cold, long- lasting winter has been a highlight for our family! It all started way back in December when my friend made us a mouth watering, homemade lasagna (as in making the noodles from scratch - something I would never attempt! Having a meal given to you is great, eating something so superb is even greater! We had Italian music serenade us in the background. We ate Polish candy straight fro...

Apple Snapple's Blog. You're too pretty to be sad…. Ok so this picture puts me in a silent relaxation mode. I miss the times I had here and the people I met. Can I go back to it? I’m so happy today was a BIG step in equality DADT will be a thing of the pass soon, as long as Obama signs, and many people will be able to serve their country. I hope it doesn’t end today hopefully everyone will have equal rights no matter who they are. Posted by Apple Snapple. 12/19/2010 Categories: About Me. When a student c...
