Thursday, 9 July 2015. Ponte Vechio Cinque Terra. La luna and the Ponte Vecchio. During the first week I was in Florence I was graced with a full moon which glowed like a delightful peach in the summery sky. To enjoy the balmy evenings we packed a picnic and ate dinner on the bridge. Ponte Vecchio. Means 'old bridge', built in 1335 each side of the street are shops selling jewellery, art and souvenirs. As promised, here are some pictures of the finished objects I was working on last week. I also made a F...

I became aware of it in 2008 when an exhibition of crocheted shapes made to resemble a coral reef were exhibited at the Haywood Gallery. London UK, where I was living at the time. The project, organised by the Los Angeles-based Institute for Figuring. Was a direct response to the plight of coral reef from pollution and global warming. Hyperbolic plane where the repeat is increasing into every 5th stitch. As many of you ...

Thursday, 26 June 2014. Material Matters: Foraging for wood. I got such great results from slicing into found pieces of wood (see last weeks post about wood and resin). That I decided to continue working with this method of using wood collected in the bush. A Stitch in Time. A stitch in time (detail). I created a needle by soldering a length of sterling silver wire to the chain to assist with threading the chain through the slices of wood. Following on from my thoughts about time and the environment,...

Kate Ward: December 2014

Thursday, 25 December 2014. Fence Studies: country town. My studies of gates and fences continues, this time focusing on the wrought iron gates found in a country towns across rural New South Wales. Wrought iron is no longer produced on a commercial scale. They retain that description because in the past they were wrought (worked) by hand. The word "wrought" is an archaic past participle of the verb "to work," and so "wrought iron" literally means "worked iron" as manufactured by a blacksmith. This last ...

Lacewood: January 2017
http://lacewooduk.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, 29 January 2017. At the Festival of Quilts a couple of years ago, I picked up a Lynette Anderson. I wanted to experiment with transferring designs using my Silhouette Cameo, so I put created the front design using the Silhouette Studio software. The blossom designs came from Susan Briscoe's Ultimate Sashiko Source book. I used a Frixion pen in the Cameo pen holder and it worked very well. For the sashiko stitching I used some silk thread I had bought from Kimonomomo. Saturday, 28 January 2017.
