August 13, 2015. Alphabet Soup: WELS-LCMS Relations. By Albert Bothe. Courtesy GHDI. The gospel is preached. That's as true in the Missouri Synod as it is in Wisconsin. LCMS church and find orthodox doctrine being preached from the pulpit, as seems to be the case for many in the WELS. I don't want to sound like I'm promoting unionism here, but IMHO, part of the solution is that we have to get together more often. Although ELS, WELS, and LCMS theologians have been having informal discussions at the Em...

Scapegoat Studio Blog: April 2014
http://blog.scapegoatstudio.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
April 21, 2014. Do This if You Want to Live. This Easter Sunday, we enjoyed a wonderfully Christ-centered worship service at our home church, Grace Lutheran in Seward. The hymns all were rich and powerful, the liturgy played a key role, and the sermon delivered law and gospel just as it should have. The choir did not overwhelm the service with special music. And with an attendance of about 70, the congregational singing was unusually boisterous for our small parish. And that's what this visitor to Grace ...

December 11, 2014. The Unexpected Nature of Beauty. A topic that came up during my presentation at the Worship Conference this summer was the nature of beauty. Is it objective, or subjective? Is it in the eye of the beholder? How do you define it? 1 Beauty is not in the eye of the beholder. With so many differing opinions as to what is beautiful, how can I say this with any certainty? From the very beginning. How can a universe made of inanimate matter be either good or bad? If a tree falls in the forest...

Scapegoat Studio Blog: On Form vs. Content: Musical Style and the Overemphasis on Texts

August 5, 2015. On Form vs. Content: Musical Style and the Overemphasis on Texts. The oft-repeated WELS worship principle is this: The texts must dominate, the music is subordinate, and we should set standards of excellence. In little more than a decade, Koiné. Has become a household name in the WELS, and their music is a good case study in regard to the WELS worship principles. One of my favorite hymns is Jesu meine Freude. And it is also one of my favorite Koiné. I think we can, and we must. Credit for...

August 11, 2015. Art Ed Done Right. I've publicly lamented the lack of good art instruction in our Lutheran schools, especially for younger children, and until recently, I knew of no admirable programs to hold up as examples. A few weeks ago I attended the 15th Consortium for Classical Lutheran Education. CCLE) conference, in Keller, TX. As a faculty member of Wittenberg Academy. Different from any art program I've seen or even heard of. Photo courtesy Pr. Paul Nus. Artsonia, by Gracie3419, Grade 7.

June 6, 2015. Logo Process: "Business Stuff". Now that I've walked you through the design process (see my previous post. I'm guessing the little accountant in you still wants to know the bottom line: how much does it cost? This post will be dedicated to dotting the "i"s and crossing the "t"s: fees, payment schedule, contracts, and legal obligations. (I know, they're my least favorite part, too.). Unused logo that incorporated the shape of the church's windows. The absolute lowest I currently. By the way,...
