maiabird's brain: Rusty Birder

Friday, July 31, 2015. I had to go to work on the day of the Metro Manila Shake Drill and as I didn't want to be caught in possible traffic and be late (I hate being late! I decided to go to work before the 10:30am city-wide earthquake drill and also sneak in an hour of birding in the UP Diliman campus. I walked towards the small row of ficus trees and I was right! Dark red berries dotted two of the three trees in front of me. A Black-naped Oriole. Was there busy feeding on the ripe fruit. I sat on the s...

Thursday, March 27, 2014. Being a birdwatcher, I have gotten used to paying attention to details. Often, I am awed at the amount of details on a bird: its color, its spots, its barring. I've also learned to pay closer attention to the not-so-obvious details: its eyebrow, its eye ring, its wing bar. All this I have come to appreciate when birding. Different birds with different details: colors, spots, barring! I went with fellow birders Anna, Manny, Trinket. Our dining room for that weekend =). Was overwh...

Sunday, February 15, 2015. Backyard Valentine Bird Count. I decided to go birding on the morning of Valentine's Day. Jops had a training thing at work so I said, why not do what I used to do, and go birding by myself in UP Diliman. It is so near where I live, it can pass as my backyard ;) The weekend also fell under eBird's Great Backyard Bird Count. So I was happy I would get to contribute to the Philippine list. The trees lining the UP Oval are almost completely bare. And Philippine Pygmy Woodpeckers.

Monday, April 13, 2015. 5 Years, 14 Hours, and 1 Lifer in Subic. Jops and I went birding for the first time ever last April 9, 2010. Five years and 200 lifers after, we weren't able to go out birding on the exact date unlike the past 4 years. We made up for it 3 days after =). I took my time getting down from the car, still groggy from getting up before 3AM. But Jops and Jun were already pointing to Luzon Flamebacks. Right in front of us! One of the Luzon Flamebacks we saw in that area. This was the exac...

Tuesday, April 29, 2014. Pledge 2 Fledge 2014: From The Nest to The Table. This year, the WBCP was able to conduct two guided birdwatching trips for the Pledge 2 Fledge. Pledge 2 Fledge is the flagship project of Global Birding Initiative. The goal is to share and promote the joy of birdwatching to more people by taking them out birding. The first trip Jops and I conducted with Anna G. was in the beautiful town of El Nido, Palawan. Birding there was awesome! In my next post. In the Dalimatan trail. We we...

Sunday, January 18, 2015. It Began and Ended With Owls (With A Spiderhunter in Between! Jops and I wanted a full day of birding. Full. So, we were already gearing up at the parking area of the Tanay Rainforest Camp. At 5:30 in the morning. Our guide, Kuya Ronald, was already at the gate waiting for us. We parked near the cabins and stepped out into a really cold and nippy morning. Some of the birds were already starting to call from the darkness: Spotted Wood Kingfishers. It is described in the Kennedy f...

Saturday, November 8, 2014. I've always wanted to draw or paint well but I have come to accept the fact that that is not one of my talents. I would love to be able to draw the birds I see, or paint the beautiful places I've visited, but I am content with being able to take pictures instead. It is still another art form =). So I was really happy and grateful to have received a beautiful painting of a bird made by my good friend, Ry. And I didn't expect to actually be given the actual painting! She was int...
