Thea was born on 23 July 2013. Less than six months later she was diagnosed with MPS I Hurler Syndrome. This is a very rare genetic disorder which only occurs in roughly 10 in every one million children. Thea tragically passed away peacefully on the 10th May 2014 in her mummy and daddy’s arms. What is MPS? « Thea's Trust

What causes the disease? Mucopolysaccharides are long chains of sugar molecules that help build bones, cartilage, skin, tendons and other tissues. ‘Muco’ refers to the thick jelly-like consistency of the molecules, ‘poly’ means many, and ‘saccharide’ is a general term for the sugar part of the molecule. Does MPS I affect individuals differently? How is MPS I inherited? There’s a 50% chance of a child receiving only one copy of the defective gene and therefore being a carrier. A carrier isn’t affected...
