The Yao theatre team lives in Khunbong village, in Ton Pheung district, Bokeo province in the neighbouring village to the Lahu team. Their village is split through the middle by a broad dusty road leading from the district to the provincial capital. The theatre team live in Donekeo, a Black Lahu village, in the lowlands of Ton Pheung district, on the crossroads leading to the district capital and Houei Sai town (Bokeo). The village moved there from the hills around 10 years ago. The Lahu are traditionally upland rice farmers. Those now living in the lowlands need time to adapt to new techniques of paddy land rice farming. This was a theme in the team’s rice bank play, which also covered the subject of opium and gender related issues.

The Akha actors have a long tradition of oral story telling to inspire them, and a large collection of songs and dances to draw on. Their feisty sense of humour brings life to any subject and turns it into an entertaining play. Formed in August 2003, the Akha team have since performed plays for awareness raising on drugs and on village banking to help villagers understand modern systems of managing their money.

Participatory learning in action in Northern Laos. Mobile theatre teams are creating entertainment and learning opportunities for village communities in Northern Laos. By involving local people in interactive play performances on health, drug abuse and education issues, they are creating a forum for creative, collective learning and self expression and helping villagers make sense of the social changes around them.
