In the Fold of an Atlas: The Azores

Monday, February 22, 2010. Local Fruit and Vegetables. I haven’t eaten this much meat since…well, since the last time I visited here probably. It seems very strange that there’s a lack of vegetables here. Meanwhile, there is a dearth of local fruit. Perhaps it’s the season, but people seem to be more interested in fruit than vegetables when it comes to food that actually grows. My parents and grandma have a substantial garden to grow food compared to us urbanites. They have potatoes, taro root. So yes, b...

Wednesday, May 23, 2007. Hot Springs and Ethnic Diversity. The waters from the hot springs are said to have immense health benefits. People come to the village to collect water that freely pours from pipes, each with a distinct taste. I tried six, each seeming like its own brand of soda water. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). In the Fold of an Atlas: The Azores: Resurgence

http://theazores.blogspot.com/2008/12/resurgence.html

Saturday, December 20, 2008. I nearly forgot that this blog existed. I'm not sure what brought me back to it. Perhaps it's just that as a writer, I'm supposed to be blogging like everyone else seems to do, and since I'm pushing forward with the writing and editing on a freelance basis, I took a look at what I had an d made some revisions. I finally added photos after over a year of ignoring the blog. I came back from my last trip to the Azores in June of 2007. It's now nearly 2009.

Saturday, May 19, 2007. A group of men came to the house to sing and bring meat, sweet bread, wine, and milk-bread today. They were part of the “Espirito Santo” (Holy Spirit) festival. My dad had gone for a walk and was so disappointed that he had missed them that he actually swore. Ironic, I know. He misses a part of a religious festival and he curses the revellers for coming too early! We went home and ate the rest of the bachalau while watching my dad’s favourite telenovela (soap opera). My family ori...

http://theazores.blogspot.com/2009/06/new-blog.html

Monday, June 8, 2009. As you can probably tell, I've been pretty lazy about posting here, but I'd like to invite you to read my new blog about DVDs (and likely other fun stuff) you can find at the public library! It's called The Shelf Scene. Check it out here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In the Fold of an Atlas: The Azores. I'm a freelance writer and editor based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. In The Fold of an Atlas is based on my connections with the Azores, particularly the island of São Miguel.

The Introductory Clause

Sunday, February 03, 2013. For Christmas one year in the late 1980s, I got this. VHS tape- an NFL Films history of the Super Bowl. Naturally, I watched it enough that I practically memorized the narration. I fancied myself a Super Bowl historian, and I recorded the results of every Super Bowl in a notebook (kids who grow up with Wikipedia have it so easy). I've come to the realization that the Super Bowl is an extreme illustration of what psychologists call The Spotlight Effect. EDIT: This was written be...

The Azores - São Miguel

São Miguel is also known as The Green Island and it will not take long until you understand why. The nature of the island is just marvelous with large green fields and meadows. Most of the vegetation is exotic. In the center of the island there are some hot springs, which are really worth a visit.
