The Back Rank

Saturday, January 09, 2010. I actually finished level 30 about a week ago. But getting back on track at work from the holidays has taken most of my time. First the results (then the commentary). Some of the level 30 problems are really quite difficult and require seeing a lot of variations. The fact that I was able to do them so quickly in the past raises an old question: Does repetition just teach us the solutions to particular problems? Posted by Loomis @ 2:06 PM 2 comments. The Back Rank: How did I get here?

http://thebackrank.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-did-i-get-here.html

Monday, August 13, 2007. How did I get here? This is fairly off topic for me as this blog is usually just about my chess study or chess games. But Blue Devil. By this point I am so used to reading chess blogs, I don't recall how I found them in the first place. I'm sure that I googled something like "chess improvement" or "chess study plan" or something like that. One of the first blogs that I ever read was Sancho Pawnza. And sidebar links opened up a wealth of new territory. How do they get here? I tota...

The Back Rank: Annotated loss

http://thebackrank.blogspot.com/2007/11/annotated-loss.html

Thursday, November 08, 2007. I have my first annotated loss from correspondence play. In the game I played well positionally and had a significant positional advantage. I didn't see the right way to properly expand my positional advantage. I have it in the annotations, and I think it's very instructive for me. The game ended after a major tactical oversight on my part in response to a clever play by my opponent. I've posted the game at chess.com. Posted by Loomis @ 11:34 PM 2 comments. Another big mistak...

The Back Rank: September 2006

http://thebackrank.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 29, 2006. I'm making it in time for Friday this week! I'm still waiting on CT-Art and the books I ordered, so most of my chess time this week was spent on Chess Tactics Server (CTS). And I am definitely getting better there. My rating is up to 1668 after 14096 tries (high of 1670). This is about a 50 point improvement since I started the Friday updates 8 weeks and 7000 tries ago and more than 110 points higher than when I first started at CTS. The Back Rank: Two endgames

http://thebackrank.blogspot.com/2007/09/two-endgames.html

Sunday, September 02, 2007. I have a couple of endgame positions from recent games at the local coffeehouse. There is no doubt the importance of the endgame. It's also true that the endgame is so rich, you'll never run out of interesting things to study there. Exhibit A is likesforests. Who has had numerous very good blog posts on the endgame. Position 1, a win with bishops of opposite colors! The second position is a king and pawn endgame that features a combination of interesting techniques. Final cave...

A narrative: Opponent knows all | CHESSTIGER

Strength is more important then rating. Larr; NIC 2008-2009, Round one. A narrative: I will! A narrative: Opponent knows all. October 20, 2008. With a disgusted gesture of my hand i pushed over my king. With a hard ‘clak’ sound wood touches wood. People from the other side of the room are looking up to see what is happening. This was the last chess game i played against myself. It’s to hard. My opponent knows all my plans and thoughts. 6 Comments on “A narrative: Opponent knows all”. I dont know anymore ...

A documentation of an addict. Sunday, June 15, 2008. Do it, so I started pushing his king against the edge. I could already taste the sweet taste of "I told ya so" after showing him how wrong he was to even dare to suspect I couldn't mate him with a king, knight and a bishop! So what went wrong? A documentation of an addict. Monday, August 04, 2008. KQ vs KR Mating Tutorial, Part 1 - Philidor's Position. I think the time has come to try putting it all into a tutorial. Or a series of posts, as the ground to cover is just too much for a single post. It would no doubt fill a small book, and I'm not gonna go. Deep into it. Just the essentials which will allow you to figure the rest out, just like I did. So why should you do all this work? Board, diagonals, individual squares and the colour of them&#...

A documentation of an addict. Thursday, June 23, 2011. Another year, another hundred points. As usual, I haven't been training much if at all. Just playing blitz, nothing else. And also as usual, I've had some lengthy periods of inactivity during the year. Doesn't seem to matter much though, it all comes back in just a few days after a break. That's about it really. See you next year at 1800. ICC 5-minute: 1705, 2414 games, 1183, -1185, =46. It is best for loading in a lot of games, to your brain, to tes...

Burning Castles: February 2008

http://burncastleburn.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

A documentation of an addict. Monday, February 04, 2008. I've been playing 5 0 blitz on FICS and ICC pretty much daily now, and it seems like it's starting to work out for me. I'm currently 1447 on FICS and 1431 on ICC 5-minute, and feel quite solid. Naturally there's the occasional dive below 1400, but it always bounces back. So, what's changed? I've also gotten better at making. Another thing I've learned is to not force attacks when there isn't one. Just do a sane move instead, and let the opponen...
