Froogville: Dying in harness
http://froogville.blogspot.com/2010/11/dying-in-harness.html
Overspill of an irreverent mind. Sunday, November 28, 2010. I was reflecting the other day on my first career as a schoolmaster (nearly twenty years ago now: it seems another life, someone else's, not my own). Much as I loved the job (or certain aspects of it, anyway), I was mightily relieved to have escaped it, when a spell of serious illness forced me to retire in my mid-twenties. There's something insidiously comfortable. Freedom to do whatever you will with them - unsupervised and unchecked by anyone.

Froogville: IMLTHO
http://froogville.blogspot.com/2007/07/imltho.html
Overspill of an irreverent mind. Wednesday, July 04, 2007. Venturing to disagree (or to. To disagree) with one of the comments. I'd left for her the other day, taunted me with the dreaded 'HO' tag - IMHO, IYHO. All these bloody acronyms (lazy, and largely pointless) that have been spawned by the age of SMS, e-mail, and instant-messaging. I particularly loathe IMHO - it seems so. Of course this is. Of course it is. Who else's would it be, for heaven's sake? Are my opinions "humble"? Well, no, probably not.

Froogville: The Curse Of The Three Adjectives (Where in the world am I? [21])
http://froogville.blogspot.com/2007/01/curse-of-three-adjectives-where-in.html
Overspill of an irreverent mind. Friday, January 05, 2007. The Curse Of The Three Adjectives (Where in the world am I? For many years, standards of English teaching have been absolutely abysmal in this country - largely down to its isolationism and its arrogant (or just. Insistence on trying to produce all of its own teaching materials. Things are only just starting to improve,. Expand much beyond this - even after University-level study. As in the following typical classroom dialogue:. Eventually studen...

Froogville: Chinese pronunciation classics
http://froogville.blogspot.com/2008/07/chinese-pronunciation-classics.html
Overspill of an irreverent mind. Wednesday, July 02, 2008. I have just been delivering an afternoon-long presentation on how to improve English speaking ability. The audience, alas, were 1st year science undergraduates at a minor Beijing university, and thus could hardly speak a word of English between them (all 100 of them! It did, however, put me in my mind of one of favourite ever pieces of mangled pronunciation. One guy told me,. About a BIG sheep.". She eat a piece of ice.". I boggled some more.

Froogville: List of the Month - Things I wish my mother had told me....
http://froogville.blogspot.com/2008/12/list-of-month-things-i-wish-my-mother.html
Overspill of an irreverent mind. Saturday, December 13, 2008. List of the Month - Things I wish my mother had told me. It's 'List of the Month' time again, but this month I was rather at a loss to come up with a topic - so, this is a rather random collection. Things I Wish My Mother Had Told Me. 1) Milk goes off. 2) If you stand too close to the front at a rock concert, your ears will hurt for two days. 3) Sometimes you only get one chance. Different kind of heartbreak, but similar inevitability.). With ...

Froogville: A Classical Sunday
http://froogville.blogspot.com/2008/07/classical-sunday.html
Overspill of an irreverent mind. Sunday, July 13, 2008. It's been a long time - six months or more! Since I've posted any of my poetry. I've been in something of a creative slump this year. and the number of entries under the. Tag has remained stuck at 49. I'm not sure if this really counts, since it is only a translation, and a rather prosey one at that. It's all I can come up with at the moment. I specialised in Classics at high school and in my first degree, and Catullus -. Without being explicit; so ...

Froogville: The Question to The Ultimate Answer
http://froogville.blogspot.com/2006/12/question-to-ultimate-answer.html
Overspill of an irreverent mind. Thursday, December 21, 2006. The Question to The Ultimate Answer. After mentioning dear Douglas Adams in a couple of recent posts, I thought I should confess that he is the only person to whom I have ever written a fan letter. However, I like to think that I was the only one of them. Who got it right. Pity Douglas never got back to me on that! Briefly, for non-HHGG buffs, the search for The Ultimate Question was a wonderful. Surely the greatest of all MacGuffins! Now, thi...

Froogville: What cartoon character are YOU?
http://froogville.blogspot.com/2007/04/what-cartoon-character-are-you.html
Overspill of an irreverent mind. Wednesday, April 04, 2007. What cartoon character are YOU? My friend Kris recently e-mailed me one of those divertingly silly little 'personality profile' quizzes which purports to categorize you definitively within the space of just 10 questions - and to do so in terms of the traits of a well-known cartoon character. I don't need to do a silly quiz to tell me that. Quite obviously, I am Wile E. Coyote. According to the quiz, I am SpongeBob Squarepants. And, of course, it...
