Pastoralism Post I | BList

https://thebelist.wordpress.com/2011/03/26/pastoralism-post-i

THOUGHTS ON DEVELOPMENT, WASHINGTON, AFRICA, WORK, AND SCHOOL. Pastoralists. This semester I’m working on a paper discussing pastoralist water resource management in African drylands. And today, I am returning from an international conference titled The Future of Pastoralism in Africa , which was hosted in the capital of Ethiopia. This explains why I am flying over the Atlantic. What remains to be explained, however, is: why pastoralists? Why do I keep coming back to variations on this theme? This unreso...

THOUGHTS ON DEVELOPMENT, WASHINGTON, AFRICA, WORK, AND SCHOOL. I’ve been working on a blog post for about a week now on my opinion of TOMS shoes. It’s not entirely positive). But, as I read through news article after news article, and blog post after blog post, on the famine in Somalia, airing my concerns over a shoe company just seems irrelevant. I’ll finish it and post it eventually, but right now the very real risk that 11.5 million people in East Africa will die of starvation. July 4, 2012. You are c...

THOUGHTS ON DEVELOPMENT, WASHINGTON, AFRICA, WORK, AND SCHOOL. Toutes les filles a l’ecole. School Girls in DRCongo. This isn’t just feminist, feel-good mumbo-jumbo. This is cause for celebration, not because it furthers some sort of Western feminist agenda, but because it brings resources and attention to. Problems women and girls face in places across the globe. Discover:. Studies show that more women die or are disabled due to violence against women than from severe diseases, wars or accidents. [1].

What do you think of federally-funded foreign assistance? | BList

THOUGHTS ON DEVELOPMENT, WASHINGTON, AFRICA, WORK, AND SCHOOL. What do you think of federally-funded foreign assistance? Times are tough. We were reminded of this yet again during last week’s State of the Union address, with President Obama’s emphasis on the economy. Part and parcel with his discussion of the economy came a discussion of our country’s deficit and our need to curtail unnecessary federal spending. Here is the rub: what is necessary and what is unnecessary? We cut costs and where. I’m not t...

THOUGHTS ON DEVELOPMENT, WASHINGTON, AFRICA, WORK, AND SCHOOL. Archive February, 2012. I don’t hate TOMS, I promise. I’ve somehow earned a reputation as a TOMS-hater. At this point, it’s become a joke among friends and coworkers, who will gleefully forward along just about any TOMS-related article to try to get a rise out of me. (Which, by the way, stop! I’m not your show-pony, people.). Multi-million dollar development projects. Taking place the world over. There are much graver cases. Have discussed th...

I'm from Washington STATE: Washington DC in the Spring...

http://emilyinwashington.blogspot.com/2011/04/washington-dc-in-spring.html

Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Washington DC in the Spring. While all you folks in the Northwest, Midwest and North are complaining about snow, sleet, rain and cold, we in the Mid-Atlantic are skipping work to go play out in the 80 degree temperatures (shhhh, don't tell my boss). From I'm from Washington STATE. So I buried them again. :) Here is the list of what's growing in the garden:. Kale (three or four differen types). Yellow Squash (two different kinds). Cucumbers (maybe - they might have died). Subscr...

I'm from Washington STATE: One Pull Up. Just one.

http://emilyinwashington.blogspot.com/2011/01/one-pull-up-just-one.html

Friday, January 21, 2011. One Pull Up. Just one. Okay, so I know you all think I'm super strong and sometimes super human, but what you don't know is that I've never done a pull up IN MY LIFE. Once, in middle school, I jumped up to the bar during the fitness test and so the momentum allowed me to appear to have done a pull up and my P.E. teacher didn't see me jump so he thought I did one. So, on my fitness test form that year, under pullups, it said "1." Which was a lie. Posted by Emily Doerr.

I'm from Washington STATE: Government Shutdown: What does this mean to you?

http://emilyinwashington.blogspot.com/2011/02/government-shutdown-what-does-this-mean.html

Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Government Shutdown: What does this mean to you? I work for the government, yes, but it didn't occur to me until last week what a shutdown would do. My mom called me to ask what I knew about it and she said how this would dramatically effect her show in Atlantic City, March 10, 2011, Alliance Mid-Atlantic 2011. Just to get an idea of the brief history of what it means. There is also a great article from PBS Newshour. Which lays out how a shutdown effects us individually.

Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. If you have ever had the pleasure (or displeasure) of spending summertime on the East Coast you may be familiar with the incessant and eardrum killing sound of the. At night. The sound tends to be so loud that you must pause mid-sentence to wait for the sound to subside. Laying on the blankets at Wolf Trap. Thursday, April 28, 2011. I don't know if I mentioned that I'm taking a Master Gardener course through my work. USDA offered 120 spots in a free (shortened) Master Gardener training. Once we finish the training and pass the exam we must complete 40 hours of gardening volunteer work to be certified. It's a pretty cool idea, and while I have some criticism, it's definitely a good experience. On one of my new favorite blogs, Garden Rant. Posted by Emily Doerr. Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Tuesday, November 23, 2010. The Northwest Is The Best Place On Earth. Biking to the OSU's campus. (Jed, embarrassingly wearing Michigan colors - oh the shame! Jed's friend's bus. They built the bus to watch OSU games. Behind the bus are coolers upon coolers of beer and another gigantor TV. The owners of the bus (there are 3), rent out the front lawn of college students' houses to tailgate before/during OSU games. Thursday, July 15, 2010. Buenos Aires was fabulous, I'll post more about that later, with pictures. We honestly didn't manage to do much in the way of tourism so the pictures are mostly just of Dan. You'll all be surprised to know that Abigail, Elizabeth and I didn't partake, in fact, we went to bed early. (I actually read my book until the partying calmed down.) Exciting bunch we were. Headed back to the heat of DC tomorrow. Ciao, Chile, ciao por ahora. Posted by Emily Doerr. Thursday, July 8, 2010.

http://emilyinwashington.blogspot.com/2011/05/garden-update.html

Tuesday, May 10, 2011. The garden is flourishing! I have to say, we have really great dirt, and it's rained enough that I have only had to water the garden twice in the last month, but it's looking amazing. Soon, I'll probably throw a "Garden" party at which time we eat everything we can harvest from the garden. Can't wait! From I'm from Washington STATE. The roof garden at the USDA. Here are some pictures. Of the EMGs actually planting it last year. From I'm from Washington STATE. Posted by Emily Doerr.
