Novitiate Homesteader: May 2013
http://novitiatehomesteader.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 14, 2013. Hi there, I've started a second blog. It still deals with farming, but it is more focused on the therapeutic value of a farming/homesteading life. It is more directly concerned with mental illness and addiction. It is called, Farm Therapy. I think it is pretty cool. I'll continue to post in Novitiate Homesteader, especially items related to Christian spirituality and Homesteading skills. Thanks and I'll be in touch soon on both blogs. Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Novitiate Homesteader: January 2012
http://novitiatehomesteader.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 31, 2012. The cow has landed. Everything went smoothly until milking time. Milking a goat who is accustomed to you is different from milking a stressed cow. I guess the milking for Fancy went well enough. We didn’t get much milk, but we didn’t get kicked either. The fun started when we tried to finish chores…in the dark. Our chore list for the morning is pretty long, but I am starting to relax and feel more optimistic about it than I felt an hour ago. Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Who kno...

Novitiate Homesteader: November 2012
http://novitiatehomesteader.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 27, 2012. Better than I was. 8220;I’m not better than any of the rest of you, I'm just better than I was”. Being “broken” is part of the human condition. At least it is in my Catholic world view. Our brokenness is the reason behind Christ’s sacrifice. Being broken is part of our path to God. Grace is God’s gift to us. That we are loved even though we are broken. In fact, we are by God and frequently by others loved because of our brokenness. And, oh boy am I broken. It makes me who I am.

Novitiate Homesteader: July 2013
http://novitiatehomesteader.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 27, 2013. I posted these pictures so some fellow goatherds could help me with advice on what these bumps are. If you have any input I'd love to hear. I'm hearing that they may be plugged pores. Which would be a great relief. Thanks all. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Novitiate Homesteader: February 2012
http://novitiatehomesteader.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 23, 2012. Jenny is out of town for a couple of days. Usually she milks Fancy, our Jersey milk cow, and I milk the goats and do the other barn chores. Well, I guess Fancy didn’t like the feel of my hands, or my singing, or something. Either way it was clear she wasn’t happy about something. She kicked the snot out of me twice. Cows can pack a powerful wallop if they have a mind to. I kept at it though. I didn’t end up with much milk, but we got it done. But here I am. The deep, rich hum...

Novitiate Homesteader: Black Sheep
http://novitiatehomesteader.blogspot.com/2013/04/black-sheep.html
Tuesday, April 23, 2013. Fancy, our Jersey cow, is still producing a gallon and a half once a day. We will be breeding her early in May. We were going to breed her to another Jersey, but I think we've decided to breed her to a small angus instead an to raise the calf for meat. It's a toss up. Neither of us have any idea how to shear a sheep. I contacted the local FFA to see if they had any students who could teach us. Well, goodnight and blessed be. April 24, 2013 at 4:11 PM. An unexpected turn of events.

Novitiate Homesteader: March 2012
http://novitiatehomesteader.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 17, 2012. I am on a road trip with a great group of friends to a really spiritual, "recovery" related convention in Utah. What a fantastic time. Lots of great speakers and workshops. We are laughing and fellowshiping and having a grand old time. It's neat to get away from the farm for a couple of days. It is so hard to get away when you have so many animals. What a treat. Jenny and her sister are at home watching the farm. Thursday, March 8, 2012. A beautiful Springlike day. Wind Energy P...

Novitiate Homesteader: November 2011
http://novitiatehomesteader.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 22, 2011. We hosted our "Orphans Thanksgiving" Sunday. We invite friends and acquaintances who do not have family in the area over for a Thanksgiving feast. I enjoy being able to cook for and serve others a big meal. I use a 1st edition "Joy of Cooking" for many of my holiday dishes. One wonderful trick I've learned is to drape the turkey in cheesecloth soaked in melted lard while you roast it. It works great and gives the bird an amazing golden skin. Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Novitiate Homesteader: Cutting the cheese...
http://novitiatehomesteader.blogspot.com/2013/05/cutting-cheese.html
Monday, May 6, 2013. I'm so proud of my beautiful cheeses. We sold two of the goat kids, so now we are going to be swimming in goat's milk. We will be trying to figure out the new milk laws in Oregon. It was so great to live in Idaho where I could sell raw milk at the food co-op. I'll try to come up with some photographs today of our excursion into the mountains. Working hard in a natural setting is good for all of us. It really reminds me of the magic of God's good earth. We are so truly blessed.
