http://stunningnonsequitur.blogspot.com/2015/05/fiat-pax-in-virtute-tua.html
A Stunning Non Sequitur. Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Fiat pax in virtute tua. I had no idea that a natural language could have an actual assignment. Operator (that is, something like e.g. "LET x = 10" or "x - 10" in programming languages), until I've discovered than Latin does. It's done through the word fiat. So, for example, "Thy will be done" is fiat voluntas tua. And "let there be light" is fiat lux. I like that a lot. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Language, Life and Logic: On reasonableness
http://languagelifeandlogic.blogspot.com/2016/08/on-reasonableness.html
Language, Life and Logic. Tuesday, August 30, 2016. Most people don't like being told what they should do or how they should think. Moralizing, in particular, gets under people's skin. In a recent piece. At The Electric Agora, Daniel Kaufman makes the very plausible point that overuse of terms like 'should', far from encouraging people to act in a certain way, often only encourages them to 'hunker down' or become defiant.
