the big reader: October 2012
http://www.thebigreader.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures. Jessamyn West. Sunday, October 21, 2012. Sweet Tooth: saved by the sugar rush. This is not me. but, gee, I wish it was. Except that she's not. Using a towel. Lying on the sand by itself is just yuk. Sorry, faithful readers. I have been on a bit of an unannounced sabbatical from the Big Reader. But in the meantime, I've been away to Dubai, Sydney and Blueys Beach. A prize if you can name which one I'm moving to next year! Sweet Tooth is the name given to one of...
the big reader: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
http://www.thebigreader.com/2015/04/miss-peregrines-home-for-peculiar.html
Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures. Jessamyn West. Tuesday, April 7, 2015. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Although published in 2012 and apparently a New York Times chartbuster, I had never before heard of this YA novel until the cover caught my eye on the way to the supermarket the other day. You had me at mysterious. On top of all that, sprinkled throughout the text are authentic, vintage pictures of (mainly) children that are downright creepy. The novel covers some tried and tes...

http://www.thebigreader.com/2012/05/notable-brain-of-maximilian-ponder.html
Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures. Jessamyn West. Monday, May 28, 2012. The Notable Brain of Maximilian Ponder. Buy from Book Depository. THERE was something about The Notable Brain of Maximilian Ponder that made me think it might be too clever by half. A quirky title, black humour and a gruesome set-up (more on that soon) – was J W Ironmonger just trying a little too hard? Had he come up with a gimmick of an idea and pushed it out to fill a whole book? He compares his task to the mapping of th...

Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures. Jessamyn West. Saturday, April 12, 2014. MARCH Apple Tree Yard, Burial Rites, The Lord of the Flies, What is the What, The House of Rumour, Orfeo, Embassytown. Book of the Month. Go and buy this book. I could leave it at that, but you probably want a good reason to do so. Here’s five:. 3 Like life, the turning point in this novel comes around a corner and smacks you in the face with no warning at all. 5 The fifth reason to buy this book is because if you don&#...

The Big Real Deal
The Big Real Deal. Monday, May 16, 2011. Three for Three, Or One. Or Whatever. In the early days of May I often, after a day of actively participating in class, decided to treat myself to a beer, or a Rum and Coke, I feel like Rum and Coke is the perfect drink to order at a gay bar, its technically a cocktail, I decided. But it is also a sort of manly drink I feel. So your logical reasoning is to stand behind them? Steve and I talked for almost two hours, drink after drink after drink, he even bought me ...
