The Boy Reader

Sunday, November 2, 2014. Crossover by Kwame Alexander. I understand the importance of standards; but when they overpower what we believe, and know is good teaching I get scared. It is very unlikely that many of the students I have taught over the years will end up as a published poet, but that doesn’t mean that poetry writing should be eliminated from the classroom. Kids love writing poetry; especially, boys because writing rules can be bent and even broken. They feel successful, and engaged. I can see ...

The Boy Reader: September 2014

http://theboyreader.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 7, 2014. The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher by Dana Alison Levy. Thank you Random House for the copy! My last school is probably the most diverse school in the city. About 20 different languages were spoken in the home. There were African refugees, the governor’s son and everything else in between. It was an awesome place to teach because of the diversity. My new school is great, but far less colorful. However, there are considerably more students with same sex parents. Eli, also,...

The Boy Reader: Oliver and The Seawigs by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre

http://theboyreader.blogspot.com/2014/07/oliver-and-seawigs-by-philip-reeve-and.html

Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Oliver and The Seawigs by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre. Copy courtesy of Random House. Earlier in the month I was at The Bookies picking up a couple of birthday gifts, and the sign in the store says “one for them, and one for you…” (OK there really isn’t a sign that says that, but it is implied! Anyhow, I picked up a new book and added it to my TBR stack when I got home. After finishing my last book I picked it up and started reading it. A while later I regretted buying the book.

The Boy Reader: October 2013

http://theboyreader.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 27, 2013. My classroom is on the second floor. I am learning new curriculum. After 15 years of teaching Everyday Mathematics I am learning how to teach Singapore Math. There are days were my confusion is probably not the best thing to celebrate, but I love the challenge. 25 boys showed up for Guys Read Book Club. My first year at Montclair I only had eight. I received an A to Z Grant to buy books for the book club. I am learning how to infuse the IB mindset throughout the day. We talked a...

The Boy Reader: September 2013

http://theboyreader.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 27, 2013. Interview with Chris Grabenstein. Thank you Random House for the book. And the opportunity to interview. Over the summer I read Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. I loved it. It was difficult to put down. To be honest, I was a little jealous of Kyle in the book. It would be fun to be part of the gang that got to spend time in the new library. Wins and can’t wait to win the grand prize, so he can share it with his family. One of my favorite names of al time, too! One of the ...

Miscellany: May 2013

http://casherc.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

A collection of various items, parts, or ingredients, especially one composed of diverse literary works. Saturday, May 11, 2013. May Bulletin Board: Wordsworth. I know I did a poetry bulletin board. Last month, but I figured another was in order! Since April was about rain and showers, I thought May should be about flowers! The first poem that came to mind was Wordsworth's I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. I thought, what can I do to make the daffodils 3-D? Hmmm, cupcake liners! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

A collection of various items, parts, or ingredients, especially one composed of diverse literary works. Tuesday, August 5, 2014. Panic by Lauren Oliver. In the small town of Carp, NY, there's a game that new high school graduates play each year in the summer after graduation. 'Panic' is high-stakes and fear-inducing and only the brave survive. With winnings of over $50K, competition is fierce. No one knows who the judges are or what daunting task they will develop next. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://casherc.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

A collection of various items, parts, or ingredients, especially one composed of diverse literary works. Friday, September 23, 2011. Who are we leaving behind? A friend recently loaned me his copy of the August Christian Science Monitor. Because the cover story was about education. The article was quite insightful and I'm ashamed to say on a topic I'd not thought about: gifted education. Are they being pushed to their fullest potential? Are we challenging our gifted learners? Tuesday, September 20, 2011.

Miscellany: Trapped by Michael Northrop

http://casherc.blogspot.com/2012/01/trapped-by-michael-northrop.html

A collection of various items, parts, or ingredients, especially one composed of diverse literary works. Saturday, January 14, 2012. Trapped by Michael Northrop. Will they be rescued and when? Does anyone even know they are there? The novel got a little muddy in the middle, maybe because we knew from the first pages that not everyone would survive, so the reader was just waiting to find out who and how. It’s nice to have a male narrator in a non-sports book for a change. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Popped?: Finally!

http://messyunquietlife.blogspot.com/2008/06/finally.html

Life just forges on, doesn't it. Closing took forever (well, over an hour). wow, that was a lot of paperwork to sign, and it was all so redundant. You'd think they'd rewrite the paperwork, so the addendums (addenda? Wouldn't be necessary. Go green, you know? Oh well. Now it's time to work our butts off to get the place ready so we can MOVE IN! Do you use music in your classroom? | Miss Natherson's Blog

Miss Natherson's Blog. Because in education, sharing is caring. Do you use music in your classroom? All The Single Ladies. The right song can bring me out of a funk, express that which I can’t seem to find the words to express myself, and take me back to a certain place or time. My memories stay alive in the music that I love. Think about it: What if you could play a song to tell your students to line up or come meet you at the carpet? You’d certainly have to hear your own voice less often. In addition t...

Throwing Spaghetti Against The Wall. Tuesday, 23 December 2014. So that was 2014. 2014, that just flew by, didn't it? In March I played my first gig of the year with TREVOR JONES, performed, tweaked and generally bettered the Getting Lost. show, and we filmed a promo video for the Fred's House title track, Bonnie and Clyde. Which involved lots of wool. June was just daft; recorded with The Dowsing Sound Collective (a track called Reality Checkpoint. And naturally, gigs happened all over the place, as usu...
