The Built Study: May 2010
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 10, 2010. State of Metropolitan America. The Brookings Institute has released their State of Metropolitan America report based on an (early? Analysis of the 2010 Census data. It grabbed a few headlines. This past weekend. Read the full thing here. Opens PDF). I'll have some thoughts on it later this week. Posted by Sean Elliott. State of metropolitan america. The Built Study: Weather By Train or Car...
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2011/02/weather-by-train-or-car.html
Wednesday, February 9, 2011. Weather By Train or Car. As New Yorkers know. And now Dallas residents now know. Transit is really no less affected by bad winter weather. And thanks to the broad brush of ice and snow that has been painted across the nation this particularly wet and cold winter, Atlantans know it now too. I'll take the snow day, please! The Built Study: Ambitious or Wishful Plan for Cleveland's Mall?
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2011/02/ambitious-or-timid-plan-for-clevelands.html
Thursday, February 10, 2011. Ambitious or Wishful Plan for Cleveland's Mall? I haven't yet been to Cleveland though it is high on my list of cities to visit, so I can't say what downtown is like now. Is it welcoming or impersonable? Is it authentic, or a fascimile or a vibrant central business district? What is it like on a July evening at 8PM as the sun sets- empty or bustling? Does the day of week matter? So skepticism is how I first felt reading about a plan to remake downtown Cleveland's Mall. Ambiti...

The Built Study: Detroit's Biggest Booster Returns
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2011/02/detroits-biggest-booster-returns.html
Monday, February 7, 2011. Detroit's Biggest Booster Returns. Yesterday during the Super Bowl Eminmem surprised many of us by showing up in not one but TWO commercials! While one of those was really just a shill for some iced tea. The more interesting commercial turned out to be a battle cry of sorts. For both Detroit the city and the industry it symbolizes. If Jay Z can bring the NBA to Brooklyn, could Em or Kid Rock bring some love to downtown Motor City? Posted by Sean Elliott. Shrinking St. Louis.

The Built Study: A New Case for the City
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2011/02/new-case-for-city.html
Tuesday, February 8, 2011. A New Case for the City. I had not heard about Edward Glaeser's new book. Or even Edward Glaeser) until I read this op-ed piece. In the New York Times today, but I really like the ideas that, from the summary I've read, he explores. To the city planning community and other city enthusiasts, myself included, this seems like old news, but its great if we can get the word out to more people (which hopefully a good, well publicized book can further along). The Built Study: Watts Towers, A Forgotten Landmark
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2011/02/watts-towers-forgotten-landmark.html
Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Watts Towers, A Forgotten Landmark. The first time I ever "discovered" the Watts Towers was probably as a kid, seeing them in the background of a Snoop Dogg video. It wasn't until college whilst playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that I realized these wacky looking towers are for real, and not just some infrastructural oddity in a psuedo-suburban wasteland of LA County. Shame on you Angelenos! Posted by Sean Elliott. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Shrinking St. Louis.

The Built Study: October 2010
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 25, 2010. The Detroit Free Press reports today. That microloans- extremely small loans made between two individuals and typically brokered by a website, until now utilized mostly to connect people who want to help small business in third world countries- have been pumping much needed cash into some of Detroit's most eager homesteaders. Exactly, there's no reason to wait. Posted by Sean Elliott. Friday, October 22, 2010. An Island In a Landlocked State. Who is exploring an attempt to jump ...

The Built Study: Spreading Vacancies Spurs New Worries, and New Solutions
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2011/02/new-approach-to-vacancies.html
Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Spreading Vacancies Spurs New Worries, and New Solutions. Since the mortgage crisis has matured into mass foreclosures, abandonment and vacancy has spread to neighborhoods previously well established. Sometimes its a completely empty subdivision (if its finished at all), and in some cases its older neighborhoods with scattered lots. How should cities handle this new phenomenon? The Built Study: February 2011
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 26, 2011. I recently finished reading "The Next Hundred Million" by Joel Kotkin and was surprised how much of the book was devoted to disecting urban development patterns in America. Further research revealed that the author has actually written more about cities and suburbs than he has geopolitical trends. Go figure. Still, I was happy to stumble across this article from 6 years ago. Posted by Sean Elliott. Friday, February 25, 2011. Crosstown Commuters and Transit. Not unlike the Mot...

The Built Study: If RoboCop Has Taught Us Nothing...
http://thebuiltstudy.blogspot.com/2011/02/if-robocop-has-taught-us-nothing.html
Thursday, February 17, 2011. If RoboCop Has Taught Us Nothing. People in Detroit don't want good news, they just want jobs. But while they wait for jobs and economic recovery, surprisingly elusive for the city even in the boom of the late 90's and early 00's, it wouldn't hurt to brighten things up a bit, perhaps with a giant statue of RoboCop? Though the mayor is not enthusiastic. About the effort, the lightning fast mobilization of supporters to raise the money. Posted by Sean Elliott. Spreading Vacanci...
