http://capernightsky.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Sky-High Lunar Eclipse Late Monday Night. Everyone in North and Central America - weather permitting - will have ringside seats for a total eclipse of the Moon high in the sky late Monday night, December 20th, and/or early Tuesday morning the 21st. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is visible to everyone on the entire Moon-facing side of Earth at once. "We're all looking at this together," says Sky and Telescope. Editor in chief Robert Naeye. Program for the Show. A total lunar eclipse has five sta...

Trusty Comet Garradd - Observing Highlights. Comet Garradd and M71. Comet Garradd passed M71 in Sagitta on the evening of August 26th. Comet Elenin has been getting a lot of press in recent months — and now it seems almost certain to be a total bust. Meanwhile, people in the know have been following a comet that has never been hyped much, but seems almost certain to be a fine, though not spectacular performer for many months to come. Path of Comet Garradd Oct 2011 - Jan 2012. Why is it changing so slowly?

Caper's Night Sky: See the 6 or 7 Brightest Night Objects
http://capernightsky.blogspot.com/2012/02/see-6-or-7-brightest-night-objects.html
See the 6 or 7 Brightest Night Objects. The last week of February and first few days of March offer a rare opportunity to people at mid-northern latitudes: the chance to see the night sky's six or seven brightest objects simultaneously 30 to 60 minutes after sunset. These are (in order of brightness):. The Moon (seriously bright! Venus (magnitude -4.3). Jupiter (magnitude -2.2). Sirius (magnitude -1.4). Mars (magnitude -1.2). Canopus (south of latitude 37°N). However, Mercury fades during the period, sta...

Jupiter Scar Likely from Rocky Body. A hurtling asteroid about the size of the Titanic caused the scar that appeared in Jupiter's atmosphere on July 19, 2009, according to two papers published recently in the journal Icarus. The new conclusion is also consistent with evidence from results from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope indicating the impact debris in 2009 was heavier or denser than debris from comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, the last known object to hurl itself into Jupiter's atmosphere in 1994. Pictures of ...

Caper's Night Sky: New Video Showing Water Maybe Flowing on Mars
http://capernightsky.blogspot.com/2011/08/new-video-showing-water-maybe-flowing.html
New Video Showing Water Maybe Flowing on Mars. Scientists believe they have found water on Mars after finding that lines on the planet's surface are more visible in warm seasons. Scientists announced on Thursday that they saw dark, finger-like features appearing and extending down some Martian slopes during late spring through summer, which fade in the winter and return during next spring. Opportunity Reaches Its New Home. The west rim of Endeavour Crater, seen from outside. A portion of the west rim of Endeavour crater sweeps southward in this color view. From NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. Click for full-size image. It shouldn't be long until Opportunity is peering over the rim inside. The site from which Opportunity radioed Earth has been named “"Spirit Point,” in memory of its smaller twin, Spirit, that collected data on Mars from January 2004 to March 2011. Endeavour, its ...

Messenger: Mercurys New Moon. NASA's science team packed eight instruments onto Messenger (a contraction for Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging). But don't expect a glut of images to start flowing into the computers at mission control right away. For the moment, however, the ball is in the engineers' court to ensure that onboard systems are working properly. Most instruments won't be turned on until March 23rd, the cameras five days later. The scars of impacts on Mars. ESA’...
