the sourcerer: Bird of passage.
http://thecapetownsourcerer.blogspot.com/2015/07/bird-of-passage.html
Sunday, July 5, 2015. The usual suspects arrived. A scruffy Karoo Robin and his wife had daily baths. In the ashes from our fires. The flamingoes were never silent. Do they ever sleep? In the mornings pelicans came sailing past on the lagoon. After breakfast one day, I was startled by some mouse birds who came to inspect the crumbs. I had always thought that they were shy. My heart almost stopped from happiness! Every night a fat orange moon rose over the water. The Bethlehem stars shone very bright.

http://thecapetownsourcerer.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 31, 2015. This is the time that I look forward to, when I work. Nowhere to be, no alarm clocks. Nothing much to worry about, besides getting the bread in the oven. I end those films deeply weary. I don't give myself the chance to get ill when I'm working and invariably get the flu straight after. I spent some time looking at their collections, so lovely. Labels: degenerate collectors disease. Monday, May 25, 2015. Heaven is a place. I needn't have worried. They were there in under a minute.

One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. Never love anybody who treats you like you're ordinary. Accompaniment to the song "Immune" by LOW. Said the Gramophone. the sourcerer: Ode to Guava.
http://thecapetownsourcerer.blogspot.com/2015/05/ode-to-guava.html
Wednesday, May 13, 2015. One day in my twenties - after travelling through Europe for a year, I followed my nose from the pavement outside Harrods in London, all the way to the hallowed food hall. I stopped in front of some badly bruised fruit where I stood and wept a little. They were so expensive. And I missed home. In the back yard there was a very deep hole - an abandoned art installation. Mostly Jesse daubed on large canvasses on the floor. I served them for dessert, with Bird's custard. The next mo...
the sourcerer: ~ The Duchess Of Wisbeach ~
http://thecapetownsourcerer.blogspot.com/2010/09/duchess-of-wisbeach.html
Tuesday, September 21, 2010. The Duchess Of Wisbeach. The birthday treats continue. I was taken out to dinner last night by the two big P's and one small. (A special thank you to the Tall Drink Of Water for the restaurant recommendation.). We just loved The Duchess Of Wisbeach. Casually flamboyant, it's ultra-styley without feeling too contrived. Black, white and dove-grey. Small china dogs on each table. FULL of happy diners. The grown-ups all had the Karoo Lamb Chops. Three to a plate! 10084; Thanks to...

smashing: A life well lived
http://smashingcapetown.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-life-well-lived.html
Wednesday, 25 March 2015. A life well lived. If I think of Gary, it's his laugh and those devilishly twinkly eyes first, even after his strokes, he'd charade us into remembering an incident in the past and laugh heartily - delighting in the memory. And boy, are there a lot of memories- an adventurer at heart, fear and consequence.please.pfftt.that was for us mere mortals - you don't believe me? I hear the click, clack, clunk of the backgammon board, Fanie and Gary laughing, playing late into the night.
smashing: Prince Albert
http://smashingcapetown.blogspot.com/2013/03/prince-albert.html
Wednesday, 20 March 2013. I don't know if it's the air, the spectacular Swartberg mountains or the sheer nothingness surrounding Prince Albert- perhaps it's the combination. As you enter the town everything slows, all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the gentle lulling. It had been too long and it was a surprise party for our old mate Gary, we stayed at Lisa's beautiful guest house in the main road ' Onse Rus'. I'm throwing in the roadside tortoise as well. Drive by- drive home. Wednesday, March 20, ...

Tuesday, 5 May 2015. A Prince Albert wake at a labyrinth. On a clear day you can see forever-. Follow the dusty road for 37kms exactly from the Weltevreden turnoff,. Pass a Fig farm- next time-. You'll soon come to the signpost. Here at the labyrinth on the farm we gathered-. It rained as we cried,. It cleared as we remembered. And in the end the sun warmed our shared grief. Walking a labyrinth was a new experience for me, 1 km in and out,. It felt profound and spiritual-. On the way back-. I can feel th...

Tuesday, 16 June 2015. I'm a little bit broken. Happy picture to keep me calm and serene. These things happen, my usual modis operandi is to ignore stuff - things have a way of disappearing or fixing themselves. Now my doc says it's time for more tests and maybe a referral- if you know me, this is not good, nor me- so you understand, I had my babies at home in the bath- ain't nobody gonna cut me up at home! New plan- I'm clearly going to have to own this mess I've become. So dear 'whatever is wrong with ...

Wednesday, 18 June 2014. Sneaking back- like summer should. I'm trying to sneak back- just like I wish summer could,. It's been wet, windy and bloody cold for Cape Town. The trees are long bare and the flat lands are flooded. We still walk the vineyard- very fast. You see that clear sky below? Well, don't be fooled - to the right, just out of sight,. Is the biggest, baddest Nimbus. heavy and threatening. He's biding his time till we're half way, with no where to run but home-. Links to this post. This ti...

Monday, 5 September 2011. Nothing tastes quite like waterblommetjie bredie. Its a little tart, but definitely not sour, it tastes like a combination of winter and spring. With winter leaving and spring arriving, its perfect timing and the last of those delicious waterblommetjies. Monday, September 05, 2011. Can you hear the long, sobbing howl from somewhere far, far to the nnw of you? Wednesday, September 07, 2011. Where did you get them from Karen? Wednesday, September 07, 2011. And I thought yummy....

The Yale of Beaufort at Kew. I'm not sure why a mythical white beast with gold spots and swivelling horns. Would be considered sufficiently imposing to be an important heraldic device for generations of British Royals. Especially as depicted here, looking like he's about to throw up. A condition I can entirely relate to, having yesterday contracted the stomach flu raging through Cape Town. Sadly, although I am quite white already, no gold spots have appeared. Http:/ labia.co.za. 66 Square Feet (Plus). New York: one woman, one garden, twelve seasons. Wild Food Walks and Talks. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. It is hot in the city today, and I can't wait to dip into one of these. I grew many shiso plants last year (and wrote about the herb for Gardenista. Later, for supper, there will be grassfed beef shortibs marinated in soy and lime juice, grilled over coals, rested, sliced, and wrapped in a choice of shiso or American burnweed. A Cape Town Journal from Boston
A Cape Town Journal from Boston. Friday, April 30, 2010. From a recent Cape Times article: "The days of apartheid-style street and district names are numbered. In the Northern Cape, places like Hotnotskop, Hottentotskloof and Kafferbaai are on their way out. On the Cape Flats, people still refer to street names as NY, not knowing it is short for Native Yard.". This one seems to be a no-brainer, right? Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Welcome to the captivating Cape Verde Islands
Cape Verde is held up as an example to Africa. One of only a few countries ever to be promoted from the United Nations Least developed nation category to Middle income country status, Cape Verde can be justifiably proud as it is quite an achievement for a group of islands barely heard of a decade ago. The name Manuel Lopes Andrade may not be well known to all, but he is one of the most promising artists in Cape Verdean music, more commonly known as Tcheka. He has a very successful career which starte...
