http://embroiderybyruth.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, 16 February 2014. This is not just black. This is dark as ebony, as deep as jet, dark as coal, but enriched with darkest plum, midnight navy and bottle green and softened with touches of charcoal. For the benefit of my overseas readers, this is a tongue-in-cheek take on an up-market food supplier's advertising campaign for luxury food, but it does properly describe my latest limited edition Harris Tweed. Weaving Black Harris Tweed. And in the evenings, when it is too cold and dark to head out to ...

Tuesday, 29 October 2013. Decorations and Dog Coats. Ten days ago at the weekend I was working from home - part of our new regime to avoid seriously hefty electricity bills at the studio. It is strange how things come in clusters. I have not been asked to make a dog coat for a long time, but on Saturday I had 5 to make! They all featured embroidery in some form or another, so that had all been done at the studio on Friday and I was simply putting them together at home. Our next craft fair is at Eden Cour...

Designing and Creating Handmade Textile Gifts Like No-One Else in Scotland. Outer Hebrides – Our trip to The Edge (Part 4). August 1, 2013. Our final day on the Hebrides started again with a hearty breakfast at the Old School. We had a lovely chat with our host Heather, only to discover that amazingly we live next door to Martin’s (Heather’s husband) Aunt and Uncle! To stock up on some tweed, and also to travel up to Eoropaidh in the very North of the island. We follow their Facebook page. It’s a fairly ...

Saturday, 5 April 2014. The Isle of Lewis in early spring. Then, Gail was designing and making a stained glass window and I was making an alter frontal. To see other examples of Gail's work, click here. You can see more of my ecclesiastical work on this website. This time, Gail was just having a holiday - I was combining my usual routine of cooking and weaving with making some deliveries and having some much appreciated time off. The surf rolling in at Dalbeg. Inside the restored Kiln where in Norse time...

Tuesday, 23 December 2014. Weaving Vadmal III - Interlude: Going to the Hebrides. In early June, most of the vadmal weavers took a break from their looms and went to the Outer Hebrides. Or in my case, just took a break. To be part of the new Textile Fashion Center. The Hebridean adventure was all planned and booked in advance by our wonderful teachers Margareta and Maria, so all I had to do was just to be there. Passing by a Passing place on Lewis. Tweed yarns at Carloway Mill. Sheep in the rain. We also...

The Carloway Mill | Harris Tweed
The district is known throughout the Western Isles for its Agricultural Show and Highland Games, held annually on the first Wednesday of August at the Show Ground. . Read More. While the weaving industry has undergone many changes over the years, the one thing that has not changed to any great extent is the lifestyle of a traditional Harris Tweed weaver. It was in 1846, when Lady Dunmore developed The Murray of Atholl Tartan in Harris tweed , and then began to market the cloth globally , that The Harris ...
