Smiths “Deluxe” A.420 anti-magnetic wristwatch – Amateur Watchmaking

My attempt to learn how to make and repair watches. Smiths “Deluxe” A.420 anti-magnetic wristwatch. April 10, 2014. April 10, 2014. This is one of my favourite Smiths watches. It is supposed to be anti-magnetic and is a close contemporary of the first Rolex Milgausses (c.1957? The movement is the Smiths 12.15 without shockproofing. The case back has a ring inside it to hold the case ring in place. The escapement and bottom plate. The keyless work and train. Parts in the cleaning basket. I was wondering t...

My attempt to learn how to make and repair watches. Smiths Military pocket watch, GSTP, WW2, c.1941, calibre 600. July 11, 2014. July 13, 2014. The design of both the movement and dial closely resembles certain Jaeger-LeCoultre designs, apparently there was no formal business relationship between them but Smiths did employ a French watchmaker who had worked for Jaeger-LeCoultre named Robert Lenoir, however Smiths did retail Jaeger aviation clocks during WW2. Obviously the keyless works layout is reversed...

My attempt to learn how to make and repair watches. Waltham, “home”, 7 jewel, cal.1876, size 14, silver hunter pocket watch. October 25, 2014. October 27, 2014. This I’m afraid is the cheapest possible Waltham pocket watch. In fact they were so embarrassed about it they didn’t sign the dial or the movement. Apparently these were made to combat the new National watch co. (later called Elgin) which was going to undercut Waltham, without drawing the Waltham brand down-market. You can see in the photo above ...

My attempt to learn how to make and repair watches. GUB Q1, calibre 60.3, chronometer wristwatch, c.1960. July 6, 2014. July 6, 2014. The dial looks really awful with cracking all over, I wonder if it may have been exposed to some kind of heat source. The movement looks quite clean, as this is the chronometer version it gets the decorative Glashutte snailing effect on the ratchet and winding wheels (this was later changed to the common starburst pattern). This movement is fairly straight forward in layou...

My attempt to learn how to make and repair watches. Samuel Yeomans, Marcks and Co. of Bombay, silver pocket watch, c.1898. May 21, 2014. May 21, 2014. The reason the rough movement for this watch came from the LWC is because CWMM lacked the capacity to fill orders and therefore purchased movements from LWC to meet demand, and the LWC needed the money. Various stages of disassembly. This watch is really dirty, are those cobwebs on the centre pinion? The mainspring barrel has also been filed near the hole ...

My attempt to learn how to make and repair watches. Jaeger-LeCoultre, calibre 450, ligne 12.5, 1930’s wrist watch. August 3, 2014. October 25, 2014. The above watch looks a bit plain, but the movement is considered to be one of the best ever made, a Jaeger-LeCoultre 450. I’m not sure that the movement started off life in this case but I’m not paying for an “extract from the archives” to find out as that costs 250 CHF! I also have to find one of those. Parts in the cleaning baskets. This movement uses a T...

My attempt to learn how to make and repair watches. Prim Sport II, calibre 68, vintage diving watch. June 25, 2014. June 25, 2014. This watch is a Prim Sport II from Czechoslovakia, it is nominally a diving watch but it is only 60m waterproof and doesn’t have a screw down crown, also the bezel is plastic for some reason and therefore has a break in it. Out of interest the Girard Perregaux Calibre 3000/3100 uses two Russian watch features, first the use of a Gasket to adjust balance end shake (which is a ...
