The Code War
The shift cipher is probably the simplest example of a classic substitution cipher. A method once used by Julius Caesar to encode messages sent to his confidants, the shift cipher simply shifts the letters of the alphabet by a certain number of letters in either direction. For example, a one letter shift would determine that 'A' becomes 'B', 'B' becomes 'C' . 'Z' becomes 'A'. The shift cipher's simplicity makes it easily deciphered.
