Diary of a Country Cinephile: August 2010

http://cinemastu.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Diary of a Country Cinephile. Thursday, August 19, 2010. The Ghost Writer (Roman Polanski, 2010). A lot of people compare The Ghost Writer. In its grasp of paranoia and political corruption, but the most obvious reference point to me seems to be Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps. Manages goofy fun in the name of genre, seriousness in the name of tone and content, and maturity in its rejection of the overwrought defeatism that has made Chinatown. The ever-enduring hallmark of Polanski’s filmography.

Diary of a Country Cinephile: April 2010

http://cinemastu.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Diary of a Country Cinephile. Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Mélo (Alain Resnais, 1986). Many canonized directors often wind up endlessly lauded for a single work, and for Alain Resnais Last Year at Marienbad. Is that film. I had heard about it numerous times before ever once hearing about a single post-sixties film of his, or even his 1963 Muriel. Made only two years afterwards. I suppose like many people, I started with Marienbad. A few weeks ago I revisited Marienbad. Today I watched Mélo. Would be genuin...

Diary of a Country Cinephile: Exploring Cassavetes: SHADOWS

http://cinemastu.blogspot.com/2011/03/examining-cassavetes-shadows.html

Diary of a Country Cinephile. Friday, March 25, 2011. When I first watched John Cassavetes' Shadows. And The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. Have taught me that forming conceptions of Cassavetes films is fruitless work. And Hitchcock's 50s period. Given that Welles's style changed drastically after traveling to Europe, Carney appears to be committing the cardinal sin of consigning the director to his most overpraised masterwork. Thankfully, this polemic ends when he begins to write about Shadows. This is no...

Diary of a Country Cinephile: June 2010

http://cinemastu.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Diary of a Country Cinephile. Wednesday, June 30, 2010. White Dog (Samuel Fuller, 1982). To some seems like a no-brainer anti-racist film, a view no doubt enforced by Fuller’s blunt dialogue and metaphors, but I found it absolutely brutal. Comparing Fuller’s treatments of racism in both this film and The Steel Helmet. Posted by mystery meat. Saturday, June 12, 2010. Out of the Blue (Dennis Hopper, 1980). Posted by mystery meat. Wednesday, June 2, 2010. The Lusty Men (Nicholas Ray, 1952). In The Lusty Men.

Diary of a Country Cinephile: Exploring Cassavetes: FACES

http://cinemastu.blogspot.com/2011/04/exploring-cassavetes-faces.html

Diary of a Country Cinephile. Saturday, April 9, 2011. Is probably my least favorite of the four Cassavetes films I've seen, but if Shadows. Has taught me anything, it's that a re-watch will probably increase my appreciation substantially. For Ray Carney, however, Faces. Is possibly Cassavetes' grand achievement and the ultimate distillation of his philosophy of selfhood as a process of interaction and even more potent than Shadows. Posted by mystery meat. Diary of a Country Cinephile: February 2011

http://cinemastu.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Diary of a Country Cinephile. Saturday, February 26, 2011. MACBETH, Take One (Welles). Consensus seems unduly weighted toward the demeaning notion that Welles's 1948 Macbeth. Posted by mystery meat. Thursday, February 24, 2011. Double Feature (Cukor and De Palma). Most of the fun of Sylvia Scarlett. I preferred Brian De Palma's. Phantom of the Paradise. Posted by mystery meat. Wednesday, February 23, 2011. My Return to Blogging. I have returned from a long sojourn, during which I came to feel that regula...

Diary of a Country Cinephile: WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS | Otto Preminger | 1950

http://cinemastu.blogspot.com/2011/04/where-sidewalk-ends-otto-preminger-1955.html

Diary of a Country Cinephile. Sunday, April 10, 2011. WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS Otto Preminger 1950. This is a noir that hits me in the same way that The Big Heat. The moment that Andrews does murder the suspect is an important one. Unlike in Anatomy of a Murder. Has a playfully antagonistic relationship to Andrews, who sent her husband away for wife-beating. In fact, everyone who resorts to unnecessary violence ends up getting punished, either by the law or by the mob, and Andrews is no exception. Simple ...

Your Humble Viewer: Halloween Roundup 2008

http://yourhumbleviewer.blogspot.com/2008/10/halloween-roundup-2008.html

Still "An Autobiographical Film Journal," plus miscellany. Wednesday, October 29, 2008. Let's not lose our heads, kiddies: The Halloween Roundup is back! But down there in the basement, the horror film hissed like a 'gator, the outer limits of bad behavior meeting the boundless audacity of Special Makeup Effects. So square those big shoulders, mousse up and bug out, because it's Halloween all day, and the '80s all the way (after a kinder, gentler kid matinee). 11:00 am: Monsters, Inc. Is a Roundup perenn...

Your Humble Viewer: Rating Game Redux 43: This Is the End

http://yourhumbleviewer.blogspot.com/2008/09/rating-game-redux-43-this-is-end.html

Still "An Autobiographical Film Journal," plus miscellany. Friday, September 26, 2008. Rating Game Redux 43: This Is the End. 2001: A Space Odyssey. Some sneer at its pretentiousness, others scratch their heads, puzzled. But it remains one of the movies’ great mysteries, a beautiful reminder that, before it was a story, cinema was an image. 8220;We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when.” You can say that again. Funniest apocalypse ever. Paths of Glory (1957). Posted by Paul J. Marasa. Awesome ...

The Constant Viewer Memorial Page. The Short Goodbye to The Constant Viewer: Excerpts from an Imaginary Cinema Diary, 1876-Present. I started this project in 2006, and eventually posted well over 600 entries from the Diary. To be honest, the cliché "labor of love" always seemed inadequate to express my commitment to the Diary. But now that love's labors are to be lost, I realize how deeply I loved editing it. From that first moment in the camera. On his blog. Thanks, Roger; save me an aisle seat. I'll cl...

Market Lane Coffee, Melbourne

Drinking Coffee In A City That Loves To Drink It. Jul 27, 2015. On saying goodbye to the little things. I didn’t plan to sit there for an hour, carelessly lost watching as customers walked in and out. Most of the people who came and went carried colorful, heavy bags filled with produce purchased just outside at the Queen Victoria Market. I remember this vividly because I, too, carried colorful, heavy bags that I would later bring home to prepare for our weekly Sunday family dinner. Jul 4, 2015. Imminentl...

That is how we got this far and we'll never have an opportunity to build such alliances ever again! We owe Ron Paul so much for providing this opportunity! Here's a quick summary of the topics:.
