Mongolia’s 3 millionth citizen was born this week! This is big news — the Mongolian media has been anticipating this 3 millionth person for months. Mongolia’s president named the baby girl Mongoljin. To mark the event there is a special logo. The government is awarding her family an apartment, and all children born in Mongolia on the same day as the 3 millionth citizen will receive a financial award from the government. On our trip to Mongolia’s eastern aimags. We stayed in the town of Choibalsan (in Dornod aimag). The town has some amazing monuments and murals. This is the town’s largest monument. I’m not sure if it’s for the Battle of Khalkhin Gol or to the historic Mongolian – Soviet military partnership, but it’s a cool looking monument. The mosaics at the monument picture battle scenes. Eastern Aimags Road Trip. In January we drove to Mongolia’s easternmost aimags (provinces): Dornod. The land we drove through was sparsely populated compared to central Mongolia), and that’s saying something. Not only did we see few gers or homes, we rarely saw any sheep, cows, goats, or horses. Tsagaan Sar, Mongolian Lunar New Year. In February we were invited to celebrate the Lunar New Year with friends. In Mongolian the holiday is called Tsagaan Sar, and I’ve heard it translated as both White Moon (more common) and White Month. Sar means both moon and month in Mongolian, so I guess both are correct? The Tsagaan Sar spread. Hats are a traditional part of Tsagaan Sar dress. They aren’t mandatory, but we opted to blend cultures and wear cowboy hats with the Mongolian deels. 2016 The Crazy Mouse.
