The Desert School

Sunday, April 5, 2009. It's time to go back to Kenya. My first surprise came at the immigration office where I successfully managed not only to extend my visitor’s pass but also somehow apply for Kenyan residency (which apparently is a must if you stay more than three months) – and all that within 90 minutes (picture taking, fingerprinting and all). This surprising left my rest of the stay worry free and available for “relaxing.”. Sunday, March 15, 2009. You said what, please, sister? On a different occa...

The Desert School: January 2009

http://www.thedesertschool.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 26, 2009. The small pleasures in life. I think that I am somehow secretly a Kenyan – I love the food, even Ugali! I have already mentioned tea. The most typical drink around here is water. Ours is available plentifully, boiled, filtered, and refrigerated so we have quadruple advantage over anyone in the camp or out in the local communities. The recommended amount of water to drink every day is five liters and I think that on most days I come at least close to that. And then there is cane ...

Wednesday, March 4, 2009. 8220;Here, we were ambushed at night but one of the guys must have recognized me. He addressed me by name and told me to turn around and go back to Lodwar. They took nothing from us and harmed no one. I n. Ever knew who he was.”. 8220;Here my good friend was shot in his chest. He was driving a bus and as he slowed down to pass through this empty river bed, the bandits shot him to stop the bus and robbed everyone inside.”. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Desert School: You said what, please, sister?

http://www.thedesertschool.blogspot.com/2009/03/you-said-what-please-sister_15.html

Sunday, March 15, 2009. You said what, please, sister? One thing that perpetually fascinates me in Kakuma is communication. Languages, gestures, customs mingle, tangle and untangle in sometimes very curious ways. It is easy to come across entertaining misunderstandings (and as easy to get in real trouble because of miscommunication). 8221; to an uncomfortable-looking interviewee elicited a surprisingly forceful reply of “NO, I am EQUITORIAN! 8221; (hmm, that’s nationality not a tropical illness! Side Street Babble: Get lost, boys

http://sidestreetbabble.blogspot.com/2015/02/get-lost-boys.html

Friday, February 27, 2015. Get lost, boys. 8220;What is wrong with us? Henry looks at me again with more of a statement than a question: “I mean seriously, why can’t we just go on vacation like normal human beings.”. Or should I say, this is my 34. 8230;Is it ok that this is my 34? As I mentioned in October, 2014 was probably the most ridiculous year I’ve ever had in terms of dating. Or read any piece of news that has come out of the state of Florida…ever? I am curious and a little bit anxious to find ou...

Side Street Babble: December 2014

http://sidestreetbabble.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 9, 2014. This is the embodiment of insanity. This is also how I feel every time I walk into my bathroom (kitchen/living space) between the months of November and February, as I watch thousands of little boulders infiltrate my apartment through microscopic cracks I cannot see but that I loathe all the same. Welcome to Antpocalpyse 2014, ladies and gentleman. You can run. But you can’t hide. We’re in one of those stages right now. I have ant-proofed nearly every corner of my bathroom....

Monday, November 22, 2010. Eye for an evil eye. Another year, another dent/ding/how-the-hell-did-that-dent-get-there act of magnetic stupidity. Annoying? Yes But c’mon, whose car gets attacked by a murderous pumpkin! Or cracks a windshield on account of flying ice chunks? Or loses a side-view mirror in a San Francisco parking swipe-by? Side Street Babble: December 2010

http://sidestreetbabble.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 12, 2010. December in the UK! That is epic. And it is blessed. While London may be cold in temperature, it is light in spirit. A UK holiday right before Christmas? It's the only place I want to be. I am not bothered by the wintry winds or the icy mornings (so long as we are all in agreement, dear gods of the weather, that there shall be no snow until after the wedding on the 18. http://sidestreetbabble.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, September 18, 2010. 8220;Wow. You’ve been a lot of places.” This waitress in Healdsburg, CA is flipping through my passport, seemingly unaware that every time she touches another page and opens her mouth I come one step closer to kind of wanting to punch her in the face. That’s a big visa from Kenya, huh? Reverse culture shock this time around is creeping up on me in ways I didn’t anticipate. Side Street Babble: Take one down, pass it around

http://sidestreetbabble.blogspot.com/2012/02/take-one-down-pass-it-around.html

Thursday, January 5, 2012. Take one down, pass it around. 8220;Oh.My.GOD,” says the slightly miniature girl who has just grabbed my arm as she walks by me in the club. “You have the same look of WTF on your face that I’ve had for at least the last half hour. What is going on in here? I peer at the stranger who has attached herself to my side and give her a “hell if I know” bit of a shrug. What is going on here? Nevermind. Don’t answer that. Closely related. I’m sure of it. For those of you who have never...

http://sidestreetbabble.blogspot.com/2014/11/love-actually-nevermind.html

Tuesday, November 11, 2014. Love Actually, nevermind. There you are. How wonderful. Come here, there’s someone I’d like you to meet,” are the words every single woman in her mid-30s dreads. Especially while at a wedding. And most especially at a wedding when those words are coming from the bride’s sixty-something year old dad. Oh look. A human. Who is a man. What a surprise. Yeah So just to be clear? But you are dating someone, right? How old are you? Haven’t you thought about kids? First, it was the Mat...

Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Everything old is new again. Well, hello there…Newman. Fancy meeting you here. It’s been awhile, my fat little friend. Without going into a tremendous amount of detail, let’s summarize briefly what’s been happening in the last 2 years or so since I vanished into self-induced blogger obscurity, presumably never to be heard from again:. While I can’t make any promises on the frequency or philosophical depth of my internal commentary -. Many things) every once and awhile. Totes Mc...
