Wandering In LA: That Party Room In The Tower of Los Angeles City Hall

That Party Room In The Tower of Los Angeles City Hall. Los Angeles isn't known for historic skyscrapers the way New York and Chicago are, but its iconic City Hall is an outstanding exception. For many years it was the standard location establishing shot for films set in Los Angeles, at least until this function was taken over by newer and taller buildings, for example the U.S. Bank Tower. Unlike the City Hall of San Francisco,. San Francisco City Hall (Wikimedia Commons). City Hall from the east. Towards...

Borat, Slack, Tame. And oh yeah, Emily. From the last post's footprints in cement, we segue to painted graffiti art. As much as anything it was the name BORAT that got my attention. I thought the Sascha Baron Cohen's performance in the film was very funny, rising as it did to heights of surrealistic slapstick lunacy. Next up is "TAME". It's all right, I don't think he's dangerous. There are a couple more names at the far right. I haven't been able to decipher the last one- is it QHTM? Her name is Emily.

Trompe-l'oeil in Culver City. Ceiling Fresco by Andrea Mantegna, ca. 1470. Camera degli Sposi, Palazzo Ducale, Mantua. Or, they could break their noses walking into doorways. Fresco in the Palazzo Spada in Rome by Francesco Borromini. The fact is, you don't have to go all the way to Italy to see an example of trompe-l'oeil, because you can do that right here in the City of Culver City City, as we like to call it. If you have recently walked into this signal box. He would have seen this dangerous illusion...

Winter 1923 Los Angeles High School Semi-Annual. Los Angeles High School. That's not to say it still has any of the old buildings from 1873, or even that it's on the same site. But it does still have the continuity of existence, extending over 137 years, which is rare in this town. The first item in the book is the Principal's Message. And a picture of the good Dr. Housh opposite:. Ye Ship Of Class hath reached the shore! O'erlooking all our city wide and fair,. Upon that very place where long before,.

Victory Is Sweet, Especially After 45 Years. Whether you follow the NHL or not, if you live in L.A. you probably have noticed quite a few people around town sporting L.A. Kings attire. This is particularly true in the South Bay, which is where the Kings have their training center, in El Segundo to be exact. Most of the players live in and around Manhattan Beach. That may be the clearest illustration of what a huge deal it is for this city. Did we mention that this is a huge deal? The parade route, along ...

P Is For Palms. Palms Women's Club (detail, showing the unfortunate addition of faux-flagstone siding). Note: In the text below there are a number of passages suggesting that one building or another is likely the oldest building in the neighborhood, or close to it. As of 2015-09-14 new information- to me, that is- has come to light regarding a couple of still older buildings. This post will be revised accordingly and republished in the near future, but for now this disclaimer will have to do.). Especiall...

They Shoot To Kill. Imagine, if you can, that you are walking through a quiet residential neighborhood in L.A. Although most of the housing supply takes the form of mid-20th-Century dingbat. There's an attractive church in the neighborhood, Saint Mary in Palms. I like the way it's sited on the gore point of a three-way intersection, giving it a sort of East Coast small-town feel. But we don't generally name things in this town unless it's either absolutely necessary or someone's generosity is in need of ...

Coffee Shops Then And Now: Part I. Coffee. Java. Joe. Caffeine. Can't live without it, and.well, there we are. When we're sitting in some restaurant and the server advances with the carafe, I usually say "I believe I will. Have another cup", and my wife is usually thinking, "Jim never has a ninth cup of coffee at home." OK, well, that's an exaggeration, but not by much. Pardon me while I let my thoughts wander to something important:. Ahh, that was splendid. And make sure you get the artists from both.
